How I rate anime:

Terrible (2) - Just terrible. Not a single redeeming quality; not even "it tried" because it clearly did not. Made me lose not only time, but also some part of my soul.
Bad (3) - Simply bad. Maybe it has one or two things that aren't awful, but these things don't make it more watchable, and the negative still heavily outweighs the positive. It's quite rare for me finish something I disliked this much, but sometimes I make very bad decisions and it happens.
Poor (4) - Where I begin to actively dislike shows, rather just find them boring or unappealing. Probably had enough decent stuff to keep them from being the worst thing ever, but overall I just regret watching them.
Average (5) - Didn't appeal to me enough to feel like it was worth my time. These shows aren't offensively bad (usually just boring and/or bland), but there's no real reason to watch them, either. If I could tell my past self not to watch them, I would.
Decent (6) - Wasn't really my thing, or was severely flawed - but I didn't really regret watching this show and enjoyed it on some level. Although it's very unlikely I'll ever want to revisit it, it did have some neat ideas or parts that were worth seeing. If I use this rating for a "dropped" anime, it means I'm not really opposed to finishing it someday, but it's also not highly likely that I will.
Good (7) - Goes to two types of shows: 1. Had solid level of enjoyment; never bored me, avoided major fuckups, but I wasn't personally impressed by anything in it. 2. Had some elements that impressed me - making it rise above "decent" level - but I found it too inconsistent to give it a higher rating. Both types could be rewatched someday, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do so.
Very good (8) - Shows that were consistently entertaining and also exceptionally good in some regard, but probably won't become my absolute favourites (though, there are some special exceptions). It might be a technically very well-executed show that just didn't connect with me that much, or one that did resonate with me in a way that an "excellent" show would, but it had problems I couldn't quite ignore. Either way, I could see myself revisiting these series at some point.
Excellent (9) - The highest rating I normally use. There are three requirements for this rating: firstly, the personal appeal - it has to just really click with me, and I'll likely find it special in some way. Secondly, even though it's not perfect, any issues I have with it should be vastly outshined by its strong points. Thirdly, I'm sure I'll want to rewatch it eventually. Sounds simple enough, but these days it is very rare that I encounter such an anime, and I don't even expect it anymore.
??? (10) - ...is a rating I normally don't even consider when grading anime. To me, an anime that is absolutely perfect in every aspect does not exist, but this rating might be very rarely used to signify things that have transcended my normal rating system - their flaws don't matter to me anymore.

I don't use 1 - in general, if I suspect I'd really hate a work, I stay away from it, and it would be extremely unlikely for me to hate something I did finish enough to give it a 1. I may be a perfectionist, but I'm not really a hateful person either. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
