A anime fan since I first saw it.
It was the quality of art, depth of detail in the story 'arc's, and attention of many details all at once grabbed my earlyhood ADD.
Felix the cat was probably the first Anime I saw, even though I did not realize what it was, then Gigantor, then Battle Beyond the Stars, and when I grew up a bit more, it was the earth shattering...
...Space Battleship Yamato....
That was when I realized there was a pattern and that this was all coming from Japan.
Then I kept my eyes open for more, but there really was not much in the USA.
Just the crappy Hanna Barberra or Tom and Jerry.
Eventually Robotech (Macross in Japan) came to the USA. And I was further blown away!
Then I think marketing and entertainment executives learned a hard lesson, US sucks in animation and Japan keeps getting better.... And we started seeing more and more....
The 90's seem to be the heyday for anime. My tastes grew....
Still hate SAILORMOON, and DRAGON BALL stuff.
Either too cute or too steroid based.
I was into realism, accuracy, and lots of things in the air for plot.
Right now I am all about "Space Battleship Yamato 2199"....
The person who is redoing it is keeping faithful to the original story, improved art, and adding more to what we got use to.
By today's standard the older series had many goofs in the art, simplistic plot, and many inaccuracies.
The remake work can not be understated the monumental work and crafted quality it has returned.
Things though I am kinda annoyed with is the look of Deslok, I loved the American voice actor's portrayal of the villain. It was just so right! And even if it was not how intended, he made it his own.
Robotech's changes to the story Macross was, case in point, better recieved by the creator in how they changed and added to the 'protoculture' and the added confusion humans think its 'culture' and the zhentradi have no clear idea that its not... And the winding 3 different stories into one was just genius.
When they released the original Macross, story and all to the USA, I was .... ok, I want my money back.... and happy they re-released Robotech.
Wonder if they will consider remaking it when Yamato is done? Of course I hope Yamato never ends...
