As for Short Cuts, if you're not into comedies then you probably won't get a lot of enjoyment of Short Cuts. It was satisfactory for me at most.

I finished Toumei Ningen no Hone a while ago. I must say, I like it! Though, as much as I enjoyed it, I wish it was more conceptual and explore Aya's contemplation further more. It's unfortunate because it has realistic characters, great tone shifts, it raises questions, and leaves a positive message despite the poignancy. Underwhelming is the best way to put it.
I think you'll find enjoyment in Short Cuts but I could be wrong. If not, Hi no Tori is worth checking out. It revolves around reincarnation through various lives.
I see that you have a liking for anthologies, you should check out Short Cuts :D
enjoyed your highscore girl review.
will be giving Toumei Ningen no Hone a read.
thanks
Yeah it's definitely too early to tell with Okaeri Alice. I agree too, Chi no Wadachi displays Oshimi's talent for atmosphere and art so well, but for story I'll go with Aku no Hana any day. Both mangas have amazing character writing though. In fact I watched Gekkou no Sasayaki (1999) yesterday, the manga from which it was adapted from was one of Oshimi's inspirations for Aku no Hana. There were many obvious takeaways from the film, like stealing clothes (unintentionally?), idolatry, perversion (different in both stories but has resemblance to an extent), "suicide", etc. I decided to watch the movie adaptation because I couldn't find the manga translation anywhere, but yeah it was worth it. The key difference is in themes though, Aku no Hana is more about "perversion" while Gekkou no Sasayaki is about sadomasochism, albeit a very interesting topic. If you have some time I recommend watching this movie..
And you were right, I'd been expecting heavier subject matter with Kani ni Sasowarete (an assumption in accordance with a prejudice of mine, that more "obscure" mangas are probably heavier and more serious somehow...) and was pleasantly surprised. It's very interesting and quite lighthearted, nowhere near heavy-hitting topics. It was a great, idle read, although I wouldn't exactly say that the character endeared to me somehow. Feels too short to be of anything quite impactful imo. What made you put this manga under your favorites?
Panpanya's art was beautiful though. Her afterwords after the end of her chapters were cool too, somehow reminded me of my arbitrary daydreams back when I was a kid. Too occupied now to go back to those idle times of course.
Have a great day!
Hmm you read a lot of Oshimi too, I've read Mari and Chi no Wadachi and Okaeri and Happiness but none of them can top Aku no Hana to be honest, people say that Chi no Wadachi has the potential too but I'm not so sure about that. I think part of why people adore Aku no Hana so much is because it's an emotional ride and is so philosophically beautiful and heart-wrenching, whereas to me Chi no Wadachi has been just plain creepy and uncomfortable, at least to where I left off (chapter 50-ish), and little no none "philosophy" or the other aspects that make Aku no Hana so famed. I think it's the sort of manga people would love for their horror or story but not so much a life-changing or relatable story.
As for Okaeri Alice it has potential and I'm find myself quite enjoying it, so far it has pretty low scores but I'm hoping that it'll turn out as beautiful as Aku no Hana- the latter did have a rocky start but later on blossomed into a phenomenal story.
You have a great list! I don't remember where I found your profile but you make good reviews.
What are your thoughts on Kin no Hitsuji and Toumei Ningen? I'm asking since I don't think I've ever heard of them. Kami ni Sasowarete is a manga I've been interested in for a while now too, I'm just quite hesitant when it comes to more contemporary or confusing works since I'm apprehensive of not being able to understand them.
Have a great day!
Awesome tags by the way!
