About my rating system.
Basically, my rating system is designed to be subjective, not objective. It's based on two big factors, enjoyability and everything else. So, some shows might score higher than they normally would because I really quite enjoyed them, while others might score lower, because even despite their strengths I really didn't find them that enjoyable. So without further ado, here's how it works:
10 - The top 5% (It's an extension of my favorites. At any one time there should only at most 5% of all the shows I've watched at this spot.)
9 - Wow, its pretty great! (It's a solid show, I'd most likely recommend it to you if asked about it.)
8 - Not bad, in fact, its good! (Something that brings a something that brings it above 7. It really is a cut above)
7 - I enjoyed it! (It didn't bring anything special but it wasn't bad either, It was a fun show to watch.)
6 - Meh... (All shows start at this baseline. Depending on how good I feel they are they move up or down)
5 - Aggressively Average (This is a really meh show, nothing special and I pretty much finished it to finish it.)
4 - Average with a side of boring. (If I finished this show then it was thru a superhuman effort, or its on hold. I'll watch it... Eventually...)
3 - Bad with a side of average. (There's something in this show that's a deal breaker. Something that makes is significantly bad.)
2 - Bad
1 - Something is seriously broken. Completely broken.
Also, be aware that my enjoyability is really based on two somewhat separate scales. There are show's that I "enjoy" because they make me think and really are quite great pieces of "art" (a term that I use hesitantly). They address either real life issues or they manage to create very good world that are self-consistent and detailed. They might implement ideals well and consistent with the tone or they might make salient points.
Ex. Jin Roh, Planetes, 08th MS Team, GITS:SAC etc.
However, the other scale is shows that I "enjoy" because they are fun, either for technical aspects or just because of the oppai (guilty pleasure show essentially), these can make it all the way up to 8 but never 9 or 10). These shows are generally show's that I watch to relax and have fun with with no real expectation to think.
Ex. Redline, Amagami SS, Cat Shit One, Infinite Stratos
Obviously there are shows that fall into both camps and those are really a grabbag of scores.
There are some thing that I will ding an anime for though, things like characters who I find blatantly bad or consistently annoying to watch who detract from my enjoyment of the show (I'm looking at you Gundam Wing) that will hurt their final score.
As a final note. I am an unabashed mecha fanboy. I really do enjoy mecha shows and generally speaking adding mecha to a show and using it in an interesting/well executed manner will raise your score by at 1. However, the reverse also applies, if they add mecha and they just use it badly that can lower the score of a show.
Some stuff I find Interesting.
