Thank you for your response! I’m happy that you enjoyed the show, I haven't yet seen its recap movies but I’d imagine they would just make me want to watch the TV version over again lol. Meandering bits in the middle and funky pacing seems to be a recurring thing in Tomino shows I've seen, though nothing outright bad, sometimes even refreshing compared to shows where everything is way more predictable.
Its ending had quite an impact on me as well, my previous knowledge of the concept of newtypes came from what I had seen of Unicorn in the way past so seeing it for what it really was was a surprise, such sentimentality in a story like it isn't something I expected to work or even resonate with me as much as it did. Makes me think that my preconceived thoughts about Macross and its use of music as a “magical war ending force” (however inaccurate that may be) could be entirely wrong and that it actually could function in a war story, though I’d have to actually get to watching it to say for sure.
So far the Utena anime has been very enjoyable! quite a bit more than its manga and certainly more digestible. How much comedy it has really surprised me, its manga had comedic moments sure but nothing outright silly like the anime! The whole episode where Nanami tries and fails to get Miki and Utena to change their views on Anthy with a bunch of animals is a gag I’d more so expect from an early 2000’s anime! I’m excited to see more, and to see the cause of all of the fanfare the show gets on Tumblr, especially Adolescence of Utena.
Tomino sure is a strange guy, even in interviews (in a mostly good way). Parental issues and weirdness with female characters have been present in all shows I’ve seen directed by him, Zeta has quite a bit, I’d love to hear your thoughts on Reccoa and Kamille once you get there. Only time it's been a detriment to me is in Victory Gundam where it’s uh… certainly something. CCA has grown on me bit by bit, having seen it twice now and especially after reading the CCA novel Beltorchika’s Children, I'd now be comfortable calling it one of my favorite anime movies. Interestingly in Beltorchika’s Children, Char has a completely different final line, where instead of his Lalah-Mother line he thinks about Sayla while holding a locket with a picture of her in it, personally I like his movie line better as an end for his character, but they are both rather interesting, and I know I will continue thinking about both for a long time.
On Birdie Wing - Right??? With G-Witch S2 feeling rushed and the “we want to keep it up to the viewers interpretation" comment + the Aoi/Eve chemistry kind of burning out at the end of Birdie Wing SOMETHING had to have happened behind the scenes, why greenlight shows like those two if you're just going to chicken out at the end? Both shows ended up being fun and enjoyable but I am left yearning for what could have been.
I see you’ve finished gundam 0079, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it! Did it change how you see Char’s Counterattack, having seen that before it? I’d imagine it would make for a slightly different experience seeing CCA first. I also really like your birdie wing reviews, they're fun reads :-)!
hi your birdie wing review was a truly delightful read. I have to know what you think of the current season. I still haven't watched any of it but, you've convinced me to put it on the list
Woah that does sound like a very odd way to end the series
Especially seeing how the first season is all about Jiro's development as a character. Tossing that completely out of the window in favor of what reads like a nonsensical plot (to me) doesn't make a lot of sense. Maybe they wanted to offer an alternative timeline where options are still open; it seems more fanfic-ish than something that should be considered canon material
Poor creator, Conrevo may not have been very popular but no one deserves to have ideas butchered like that
It definitely done the job so thank you for that, the manga is surprisingly difficult to track down online
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this for me
