Hi! Welcome to my profile! I, uh, don't really know what to say. Thanks, I guess.
I'm nothing more than a simple depressed shut-in on a quest to find stories/shows that live up to my nearly insurmountable entertainment standards. Almost everything I have scored at a 10 meet this standard, barring a couple of exceptions. Mind you, that doesn't mean my standards are objectively good - it's just really hard to fulfill my subjective tastes.
My dropped/completed ratio is incredibly high because I tend to lose interest in things that don't present me with something above what I've already experienced: they go On-Hold for one month, and if I can finish it before the month is up, great; otherwise, I drop the show because I know I'm never going to bother finishing or enjoying it.
If you're here because you're curious as to how I do my ratings, I've included an explanation of my rating system below (since it differs slightly from MAL). Note that this is only for my overall opinion. The breakdown in reviews follows a different scale, but with the same general ideas. Manga/LNs generally follow a slightly different curve since I have less to compare against right now, but that's likely to change in the future once I've read more stuff.
To be rated at a specific score, the media must meet almost all of the applicable criteria I have set for that score. Everything beneath a 10 only states the major differences between something at that score and the one immediate above it.
10: THE GOLDEN STANDARD
- Highly enjoyable from start to finish at all times, no exceptions.
- Unique premise, or a very unique spin on a more typical premise.
- Multi-dimensional characters with strengths and flaws that display realistic or believable emotions and grounded motivations. Their actions must be consistent and with reason.
- Generally avoids predictable and obvious plot points for anything beyond minor arcs.
- Gets me completely attached to the characters and immersed into the world.
- Has left a lasting impact on my standards such that all other anime related media within its genre are directly compared against it.
It doesn't matter if it's serious, silly, or anything in between: No matter what it does, a perfect 10 has to execute what it sets out to do perfectly. Then, and only then, can I proudly rate it as such.
9: NOT QUITE PERFECT
Something that almost makes it to a 10 but fails somewhere critical that prevents it from doing so. Nearly perfect, but not without flaws.
8: GENRE-DEFINING
Well above average within its genre, but lacking in any kind of special traits that make it one of my personal 'greats'. I'd consider most stuff at and above this level to be 'classics' of sorts in the sense that they will always define the rest of their respective genres for me.
7: GOOD
Above average within the genre, but not without some failings. Stuff at this rating, while enjoyable, is pretty forgettable and hasn't had any long-term impact on how I view the anime medium. This is probably the lowest of the ratings that I'd consider re-reading/re-watching stuff from.
6: DECENT BUT FORGETTABLE
Fun and enjoyable, but with some pretty glaring issues or lacking in substance. Perfectly acceptable, but generally unable to keep me invested in either the characters or world. I can't say I really dislike anything at this rating, but I'd be hard-pressed to recommend it either.
5: MEH
"Meh" would be the best word I could use to describe this score. Not good, not bad, just "meh". Generally don't do anything unique or interesting, and lack anything real memorable.
4: COULD BE BETTER
Often reasonably enjoyable, but objectively lacking. Generally extremely trope driven or with generic plot lines and without any real deeper development of character and/or story.
3: COULD BE WORSE
Pretty bad overall with maybe one or two points worthy of mention.
2: TRASH
Garbage.
1: YIKES
Completely unenjoyable and with no redeeming factors. Hot garbage.
NOTE:
Often, my opinion of stuff drops over time and their ratings drop with it. There are numerous shows in my list that have dropped multiple points since my initial rating of them. If something is able to stand at a 10 for more than 2 years after I initially read/watched it, it is one I consider truly great.
