The few emotional scenes is all that made Angel Beats worthwhile for me, even if they were pretty random in the grand scheme of things. I hated the last episode enough to knock off a point, but then that last scene added one instead.
You're drawn to narcissistic bitches?! :o You must have some really fun friends!
And I didn't see the DC version, so I'm obviously missing out.
I DID like how realistic she was, as a character, especially since I've known a number of people like that--and hated them all--but I generally found her irredeemable, even if she was understandable.
Only really liked her two times: when you're manipulated into sympathizing with her, just before her gruesome end. . . and when she's in a coma. (which is incidentally when Shinji seemed to like her most, too, if for different reasons)
I understand. It was recommended to me as well so I owed it to myself to enjoy it, which I couldn't. It's just that Angel Beats! is, like some stories, very one-sided; some enjoy it, some don't. It pays to see both sides of the coin sometimes, negative and positive, before being hyped for disappointment. So you're new...welcome to MAL! I'm pretty new to internet world myself. ^^
Hah, I just rewatched Madoka and your avatar caught my attention instantly.*pat pat* Just wanted to chime in with the rest: good to see another person who saw through Angel Beats' veneer. I didn't DISlike it. . . but it wasn't good.
Oh, and "I like mechs, Cthulhu, cyberpunk, badass heroines, metaphysics, psychological mindrape, bodysuits, anime series made in the '80s and 90's, cosplay" almost compensates for having Asuka as a favorite character. :P
Hi there. I've read your Angel Beats! review and couldn't agree less, but you did put it in a nicer way than I did. However, I did not go in with high expectations so my score is probably more forgiving than yours. Also noticed that's your only review as well?
There are just so many flaws... like, why the guns if no one will die? why was angel assumed to be evil? Didn't they start manufacturing weapons to combat angel because she had holy-like powers? But didn't angel use the supernatural powers PC program to defend herself because she was constantly being attacked? What happened first?
It has to be one of the very few reviews that actually bash angel beats, and I couldn't agree more.
AB! wasn't bad, it was somewhat enjoyable but not for the right reasons. It was not exactly funny, nor emotional.
Four major flaws in my opinion:
-They mixed too many genres just for the heck of it.
-13 episodes is not enough to do anything for the 15+ characters.
-There was no plot. It was all over the place and filled by inconsistencies and nonsense.
-The characters were incredibly unoriginal, this is common in animes but in this case it was extreme. I feel like they were blatantly ripped off from haruhi, it was that bad.
But there are too many fanboys out there that were cautivated by the frivolity of it all. Oh and that final plot twist... was shocking, weird, uncalled for, didn't make sense, laughable, strange, unbelievable... ANYTHING but saddening.
You can't have no plot and no character development in a dramatic show. It just doesn't work.
