Personally, and admittingly, I've never played or watched any of the VNs myself, but I have looked up a good bunch of stuff beforehand but only for certain terms, lore, and such. Otherwise I don't think it's essential to experience the VN beforehand, though I will say that due to how the adaptations are, certain people are too jaded by the Fate franchise because they think it's being too "smartass" and such...some of them unfortunately being mutuals I know too well. I felt like the adaptations from ufotable did more than enough to be their own solid presentation, personally.

I still hate Maid-sama. The characters, the terrible art, the shoujo tropes. It is at least watchable subbed, but the dub is unbearable.
