Oh really? See, I felt the anime was packing every single scene with as much info as possible, simply because it couldn't go as in depth as the light novel. That's what I adore about the series; how in depth it is. This is the climax of the light novel that requires a lot of explanation and setup, and I'm amazed the anime could get it done in such a short time.
But that's what I meant when there's "a lot of implied, inbetween the lines, storytelling"; it's still there but to get the more explained version you have to read the light novel.
I thought 3 was by far my favorite part and I enjoyed every second. You do appreciate it more once you see the big picture at the end though; when it's happening, especially the first time, it is especially jarring. But the series was always like that, haha. One of those "the more you watch, the more sense it makes" kind of series. Episode 1 of the first series is such a total mindfuck the very first time, and it only makes sense in hindsight.
