Yes. The first episode has divided fans. Some are like omfg this is the best shit ever, and some goes like it's the worst ever. The series gets really good in the later episodes. The early episodes are average at best.

I really suggest you give Shin Mazinger a chance again ^^ if you can. Episode 1 starts in media res and is mostly some sort of preview of things to come. That's why it's kinda confusing to new peeps.
