Haha, I usually find myself reading critical reviews on shows I really like because it gives me another perspective to go off of besides just what I think or what everyone else who thinks it's good thinks, you know? So I wasn't offended at all, I just wanted a clearer picture of what you thought. I don't want to seem like a pushy fan. :D

Yes, going through it again might change your perspective on it. That's how it was for me; I didn't really like it much the first time I went through it, but it all changed the second and third time, along with the film. In the end, however, it is all up to you.

I hear ya. I'm in no way saying that your opinion is wrong, heck mine can be just as wrong for all I know, but I do have a different perspective on the matter.

I like to look at the series as a upside down U, where in the first half of the series the characters are developed upwards, Shinji is slowly and subtly developed to the point that he actually starts looking more like a hero of a story (i.e. he doesn't whine as much, he isn't as frightened as he used to be in the first 6 episodes to get into the Eva and fight; and yes, I think that Shinji is developed much more slowly in the series than in the new movies). This half is also used to expose the characters, even secondary characters such as the nerv technicians get subtle development which mostly comes into play in the ending film The End of Evangelion (which I recommend seeing, especially since it seems like the final two episodes didn't appeal to you). A lot of this development hasn't been possible in the new films because of the time constraints of the movie format relative to an episodic format.

The second half is the descending arc where everything goes to shit. everyone is repeatedly tested psychologically and ultimately leads to the unconventional story-telling method used in the final two episodes.

You're right in thinking that the final two episodes were rushed because they were. Limited budget and time coupled these final episodes to the point that barely any animation was used. However, the outcome of the characters mental state was explored in a very creative way (imo), and it really seemed to me that these characters were actual human beings suffering from clincial depression. In the end, this mental state is what really mattered in order to communicate the overall message of Eva. However, if you want more closure to the narrative, again, The End of Evangelion is a must (and was the actual intended ending, btw).

I can't really judge the new films too much because I feel that I need to have seen the final two films in order to be fair, but so far I believe comparing them to the original series is a mute point. The new films are becoming their own; for instance, Asuka is not only identified differently (Shikinami as opposed to Soryu) but her personality is also completely different. She is anti-social and much more open to her emotions. Soryu, on the other hand, was obnoxious, popular and liked to be around people, and never wanted anyone to look past this facade she created for herself. Overall, the characters in the films are more open to interaction (something a lot of people have identified as either being more realistic (which, in of itself is subjective) or more conventional compared to the original series)

I'm not really sure of that point you had about Shinji calling Asuka a rookie. Do you mind telling me which episode that was?

I will agree on one point, though, Ritsuko was in need of an eyebrow treatment 8D

So yeah, those are my very BASIC thoughts on the matter. I don't like imposing anything on people, so don't think of this as me attacking your opinion or anything. Eva is just something I'm very passionate about is all, haha.

Just because I'm curious, what exactly from the original Evangelion series did you find to be "not good", and in what ways has the new movies improved upon the original production, besides the fact that the animation is modern and the characters are developed more quickly?
