My own ratings: When I rate an anime, I check first and foremost not the story, not the number of cliches it had, not how smart and original it was but hwo it affected me personally. A work of fiction should have a reason for being; it doesn't necessarilly need to have an aesop but it should either scare me, shock me, entertain, make me happy, make me think, or cry, or vomit. If I'm thinking that there is probably better stuff to do than watch or read this anime or manga, thre is something seriously wrong with it.
The story does play a factor in my ratings but the number of cliches a story has isn't indicative of it's quality. It's how they are used that matters and if an anime doesn't give me anything new, it will be rated lowly on my list.
