A few words about Gintama: Updated 1/1/2016 (Happy New Years!)
Ah yes, Gintama. That ongoing series, which for those who have yet to see, is mysteriously perched atop much of the all time rankings on MAL. Let me say this, as a relative amateur in the anime world: Gintama is supported by a select few diehards who have had the balls to begin that 201 episode journey which deters many at first sight. Logically this is why Gintama as a franchise takes up half of the top 10 on MAL: Those who watched Gintama enjoyed it greatly and moved on to the sequels and rated them highly as well.
Where Gintama shines is in its comedic and episodic nature. The series is almost strictly episodic, though there are some overlapping plot elements that connect the story arcs. But these story arcs (which usually last 3-5 episodes), in my opinion, are not the headliners. Where I enjoyed this show the most (so far) is in the short slice of life episodes that act as buffers between the oftentimes dense plot arcs. This may be a simple consequence of how I approached this show. The way I treated this show was as a filler between the work week and studying, so naturally I would enjoy the slice of life episodes more than focusing on plot arcs with its intricacies and mental exercise involved. That being said, the fight sequences are fucking balls to the walls. You will learn to love Gintoki along with the fleshed out secondary characters such as those of the Shinsengumi and of course Kagura and [Shinpachi, the person who keeps us viewers down to earth through the craziness that is Gintama].
Gintama is like a fine wine. The more time you give it, the better it gets. In my view, the people who say that you should give the series 20, 30, 50+ episodes before dropping (if you haven't already been hooked) DO speak the truth. The show's humor is crude and sudden, but very unique, especially when supplemented by the amazing cast of characters. Give it a shot, but don't forget to give it some time as well.
