And then the whole philosophical backdrop that comes full circle with End Sky II and Ayana's world...again I understand why it's controversial, but it wrapped up my main gripe with the true route, since Ayana was of course my biggest question mark throughout the whole game. That last layer of mindfuck, and seeing the full explanation/theory behind it and remembering the spirit room trip left me in total shock, realizing Ayana's probably reality. It's like I said, the game and its themes are so multi-layered its insane, and to end it in such a poignant way just topped off the dementia vibes that were so prevalent in the beginning/middle of the game.
It's definitely left its mark in my mind and left me a lot to think about, so thanks again for steering me toward it!!
Yep that's right on point, the careful attention and monitoring of the psychology of the characters in their situation is the biggest similarity, and what drew me in the most to Gakkou Gurashi. And your point about the girls' escapism/steadfast practice of their daily habits like Taichi is an important point that so many anime viewers missed. After the first episode I saw a multitude of comments like "moeshit with a twist" and "wow the zombie apocalypse is just there as a cheap bait device for another bullshit school life show". Those kind of comments epitomize the lack of imagination and open minded attitude that this kind of genre demands from its audience. Having read C+C and recognizing the similar feeling may have helped me in this case because of the delicate, subtle yet heavy style of setting up development. I haven't been able to keep up with the episode discussion threads that well so I don't know how widely that attitude prevails, but I think people's lack of imagination and attention span in this case could offer some insight into C+C's lack of popularity(even though the dynamics and story are still obviously quite different in their own respects)
Yeah that's a good point, I wonder does the manga dig into that idea further? I mean in C+C we have the club serving multiple plot purposes, serving as the escape, the hope, and the representation of confirming a sealed fate. So there's a lot of ideas to play with there. It's also an important point you mentioned with the other girls wanting to protect their daily lives to an extent. Yuki's character is so dominating in that aspect, to the point the viewer feels like the other girls don't have time to think about themselves because they're so busy helping her protect her illusion. But the hints have certainly been there to foreshadow their conflicts and how they are protecting their sanity. I just kind of hope the school life club activities doesn't ultimately lead to a disastrous event the way the broadcasting club project religiously did :o
Yeah I got the feeling she was a bit toned down, since they seemed to include her early on before the true 'introduction' to her character and the internal conflict she faces. So hopefully now that that's out of the way she'll come across more like you described. If not, then I suppose I have another reason to look forward to the manga.
How are you feeling about the anime now? It's still keeping me engaged for sure. Somewhat frustrated with Yuki's character and how much of a burden it puts on the girls, but her actions with Miki in the mall were quite telling in how her character will be handled in relation to thematic presentation.
Yep, that one line I think Miki said about whether it's just their city or all of Japan, further affirmed my thoughts. The setting and atmosphere were probably what alerted me first, but I think it's the dynamics the situation seems to be setting up for the characters that really got me. Like you said, it seems to be setting up a looot of similar ideas in a subtle way, and I could pretty much feel that in ep 1. So I'm really looking forward to what the girls have to face, especially now. But yeah the school interior was probably the main thing that drew me to that conclusion. It was super subtle, but as I saw more it gradually put me in the same frame of mind I was in reading C+C, and by the end of the end of the episode it had hit me like a shovel.
Yeah I loved that they did that, and that Miki's personality(Gakkou Gurashi) is more like Kiri's in C+C. Didn't even think about the Megumi Sakura-Kiri Sakura connection though! Ooh no that's a good catch! I actually hadn't really thought too much about the rooftop till ep 2, but with the similarities you mentioned there and all the other nods, there's no way that cross doesn't have meaning. Ah man a crossbow? This is getting too good. Okay, so I'm definitely going to read the manga lol. But, I would normally start after finishing the anime as long as the anime keeps up the tension and doesn't go way original, and I think Lerche's doing a great job so far. But you'll have to let me know if they start making a bunch of changes that ruin the character tension so much that I'd be better off reading the manga.
