The first anime I ever watched was Sailor Moon - back when I was so young that I didn't know the term 'anime' even existed. Then when I was a teen I watched Evangelion and Escaflowne, and well, that was the beginning of my
obsession love for all things anime.
As far as ratings go, anything
8 and above is anime that I consider to be worth watching, and has that little something that makes it stand out above the rest, so yep, consider those anime as ones I would recommend. I'll admit I've given some of my favorites scores below 8 - just because I love them doesn't mean they are amazing, mindblowing anime (example: InuYasha )(my FMP! scores are probably higher than the show deserves though, because my love for all things FMP! overrides my reasoning skills). Of course, my definition of what makes an anime 'good' or 'bad' may be completely different from yours, so it's quite possible that a series that I think sucks is in fact brilliant from your point of view...different strokes for different folks, if we all thought the same thing than life would be possibly a lot more peaceful but definitely more boring.
Oh, and I just have to add there is nothing I love more than reading a good rant about an anime, even if I enjoyed it, there's no such thing as perfection - being a mindless fangirl is not something I aspire to be!
"A mocker? You mean I am malicious? Well, yes, perhaps I am a little...I hope, Engineer, you have nothing against malice? In my eyes, it is reason's keenest dart against the powers of darkness and ugliness. Malice, dear sir, is the animating spirit of criticism; and criticism is the beginning of progress and enlightenment." - The Magic Mountain, Thomas Mann
*** my love for anime comes and goes so there will be times when I don't really update/login, but I'll be back eventually ;)
~ 100th anime - Summer Wars.
~ 150th anime - Fruits Basket.

Birdy ~ heroine from Tetsuwan Birdy Decode.
+ watching:
~
Full Metal Panic Invisible Victory ~ I can't believe after all these years we get another season! What a time to be alive ;)
~
Hanamonogatari ~ Even though there are a couple of things I really dislike about this anime I keep watching? Hmmm.
+ reading:

Vampire Knight Memories ~ Continues to be full of fail but I shall keep reading until the bitter end. Hino's art is a thing of beauty.
CREATERS DESERVE COOKIES FOR:
1.
Neon Genesis Evangelion ~ as far as the plot goes in NGE I still think it's a mess, but that fans have managed to get more out of it than what the creators put in, and hey, that's a good thing. Ultimately, what I love about NGE is the poor, screwed-up group of individuals that make up the cast. Shinji is basically a lesson to everyone: the world may be harah but you can't barricade yourself in, enjoy it, pain and all. I do not hate the Rebuild but I think it's as shallow as puddle compared to the original.
2.
Revolutionary Girl Utena ~ I'd need more than a few sentences to sum up my feelings on Utena. Perhaps a quote instead?
"I see. It's that memory that's been supporting you up until now. No need to be ashamed. Because the memory you possess is a worthy one. Only those with beautiful memories are allowed to wish, 'If only those days could last forever, if only I could still be what I was back then.' I know that you're the same as myself. Your eyes are like those people who can't help wanting to make memories last forever." Also, advice: do not watch the movie before the series. The movie is not a short glimpse/mirror of what the series is, its got a ton of symbolism that will only confuse the heck out of non-series fans (well, ok, it confused series fans too, but they chose to embrace the feeling).
3.
Full Metal Panic ~ because every anime fan should have some lame mecha show they love relentlessly?! If they ever animate 'Stand by Me' I'll cry a river.
4.
Natsume Yuujinchou ~ Watching is akin to visiting some wonderful warm place that's too good to be true...sometimes it's nice to feel uplifted and forget about the harsh realities of life.
5.
Mushishi ~
6.
Cowboy Bebop ~ an old favorite, I suppose what I like the most about it besides the characters is how it manages to be on a shallow level, highly entertaining, yet at the same time if you want to look deeper it has another complex layer to explore.
7.
5 Centimeters per Second ~ I can see how some people would find this film 'dull', but personally I love how realistic it is. People drift in and out of our lives, sometimes we meet them again, and sometimes we have to let them go.
8.
Tetsuwan Birdy Decode:02 ~ the first season is bland, and despite the second season being an improvement, it's still terribly predictable, but...something about Birdy as a character is so perfect that I love this anime.
9.
Escaflowne: A Girl in Gaea ~ partly a favorite due to nostalgia. The only really outstanding thing about it is the soundtrack. Emo boy meets emo girl, together they overcome their inner emo. Really, my love for this film reveals the sad truth: I am a sucker for angst.

Sometimes you put up with so much cheese or questionable episodes just to get to the scenes that make you adore anime. For me Clannad is a good example. I really have to force myself to watch a lot of season one. I think I gave it a 7 and I'm never sure if that's rounded up or down. It depends on what episode I'm on at the time. Then there's season 2, which I gave a 10... rounded down. Ano Hana was like that too. It took some forgiveness to appreciate the charm.
Hotarubi no Mori e?? Never heard of it but I'll check it out asap! I'm watching Steins;Gate right now which is incredible from start to um... episode 19. lol I'll have to finish it to know about the other 6 eps. Just started it Sunday. Other stand out shows that you haven't watched and I've seen recently-ish would be Spice and Wolf II. I had to buy the Blurays for both seasons and finally moved it into my top 5 just because I can't stop re-watching it.. and I love it every time. Holo also got bumped all the way to my second favorite character! You have to watch the dub, though. It's miles better than the Japanese cast. I know, I know... but it's true. Kure-nai was interesting and enjoyable. B Gata H Kei was smutty fun. Planetes was so damn hard for me to get through episode 1 (tried off and on for like two years) but once I forced myself to cram down a couple eps I watched the series three times!!
Oh!!! RideBack!!! Just watch the opening on YouTube or something. Sooo awesome! Especially with the subtle symbolism. I thought I'd hate it but I'll likely buy it. It's more about "cool" than substance. It's one of those shows where you learn more about the heroine from her expressions and actions than from dialogue. Rin doesn't say much to other characters but she has a vibrant inner dialogue. Somehow, the fact that she spoke with her actions made the show unique and the character memorable.
I'm sorry about the crazy rant. It's just been such a long time.

Hi there! Where to begin? (I'm a geek too so I don't know these things) Apparently I loved Ano Hana a whole lot more than you did. I guess giving it a six really isn't all that bad given your score curve but I really enjoyed it. Is that a bad sign?
Birdy was a blast, too! I see what you mean about it not being "particularly original or amazing" it really was still a fun short series. I know that was a long time ago (we both finished it last year).
I did the mistake of watching the Bebop movie once ages ago, just to kind of see what it was about, and at that time it didn't really inspire me to watch the rest of the installment. (I must admit the whole Space Cowboy concept also seemed pretty retarded, haha) I see now how important the rest of the series is in order to enjoy the movie. I just love how our crew just goof around, always mess things up, blame each other, but still somehow stick together. I get some real "Wild Arms" vibes :)
Oh and btw, I had my third exam today, last one Saturday, then it's summer! I'm saving the final episodes till then, woo
(now I must end this comment, cause I'm still procrastinating, hehe)
I rarely recommend Casshern Sins, although (and due to) it is probably the one series that has affected me most amongst all others. It's practically the reason I got into anime, which makes my point of view very subjective. If you are ready for all the dialogue and the slow progress, then I'm really, really happy for you. Hope you enjoy it, but I'm not expecting anything. Let me know what you think if you feel like it, I'm pretty curious.
I just watched ep 3 of Cowboy Bebop. Feeling a bit ashamed I haven't watched it earlier, because I was so determined I wouldn't like it. Really feel like watching one more, but I guess I should be studying for exams.. Sigh, I love to procrastinate :)

Heh, yes, I read "Heart of Darkness" when I was 17 myself! A very appropriate age, in retrospect.
"Wendy...hmmmm looks like it's worth checking out, Peter Pan was one of my favorites as a kid so a dark, more adult take sounds intriguing."
I'm a huge fan of the author, Jiro Matsumoto, which is why I picked it up initially. I was actually a bit surprised at how relatively normal and restrained it was compared to his other works!
Great manga though, and I loved the ending.
"Reviews on the site can be...frequently fairly untrustworthy in my opinion since the masses in general seem to think Harry Potter and Twilight are the height of reading pleasure. No offence to fans of those series, I actually happen to like Harry Potter but it's light reading and as soon as people start trying to get me to take it seriously...* head desk*"
It's probably people who read few books, and even fewer serious works, and feel secretly ashamed by it, so they try to push obvious works for children they've completed as something serious and important.
You see the exact same thing with live action films and even anime/manga on this site; people, some of them in their 20s, arguing that a simple, cliched work primarily meant to appeal to 8 year-olds is something more than that.
Some of them are good or even great (Star Wars, The Dark Knight) and others aren't, but they're light entertainment for the kids, even if adults can enjoy them, too.
Anyways, funny story about Harry Potter;
When I was in high school, I mentioned to my parents how we watched the first two movies in school (one in Spanish class!), they were both utter shit, and how I'm sure the books were equally horrendous garbage.
To this my father told me; "Actually, they might not be that bad; they're just fairy tales for little kids, after all. Just fun childrens' stories...there's nothing wrong with that."
A few months later, my father decided to read the books. As he was doing it, he would often complain to my mother and I about how these damned works were teaching kids the wrong things!
He was especially annoyed that Harry is a relative slacker, never works hard, and yet (magically!) is the best and most successful sorcerer.
Thus, my father was forced to admit that he was wrong in assuming the works had any real worth!
"Oh! And I read your review on Full Metal Panic and found myself agreeing with most of your points (except in regards to the comedy, because FMP did make me laugh), I love the series to bits but it does have serious flaws. My major grips would be as you pointed out, the plot is all over the place. And the sudden switches between school comedy and 'serious' action were frustrating, it was like they couldn't make up their mind about what type of show FMP! was suppose to be."
I watched the series and wrote my review several years ago. Nowadays, there's no way I would be anywhere near as kind (or give it something as high as a 4), or even have the patience to sit through more than a couple of episodes! Heh.
