Not really. This year, I've seen the following: SUMMER WARS, EVANGELION 2.22, and TALES FROM EARTHSEA. Otherwise, I've been pretty slow and kinda out of touch with many things, mainly because I was getting a new computer (my old one crashed) but also because there were a lot of developments going on in my life. But I am doing pretty good otherwise.

Yeah, see, I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt, too. I've always considered myself an open-minded viewer, especially in the case of these dubs. Although I guess there are places in the other dubs where the lack of experience shows for some of the actors, but how come it doesn't seem that distracting to me? Is it because of my open-mindedness too? Either way, glad we both agree on this.

I'm not familiar with most of those people except Carol Burnett, and I definitely agree about her in Annie. She was a scream as Miss Hannigan, and arguably stole the whole show. I doubt the character she'll be playing in this film will be anywhere nearly as scene-stealing or ruthless, but I hope she does a great job (something tells me she will).

I actually forgot about Matt Levin in TALES FROM EARTHSEA. I thought he did a very solid job in that movie, especially his aggressive moments. It's not often that lead characters in Ghibli dubs get recast to do other roles, but this is an interesting case.

I don't know if WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE is a Disney Channel themed show or not, but even if it is, I won't go in with preconceived notions about how the VA from there will sound, because I find that doing so only succeeds in making me tight-fisted and unwilling to give them a chance, which is what I tend to see so many internet fans do with these dubs. That's why it's always refreshing to be around people who don't do anything like that. I mean, Noah Cyrus as Ponyo wasn't one of my favorite VAs from that dub, but I certainly didn't hate her (I actually met someone who hated the dub alone because they hated Cyrus--which IMO isn't a very fair reason at all). My only problem with that dub was the remix at the end credits, but at least it wasn't during the film itself.

But yeah, ARRIETTY sounds promising. I know it sounds like I'm too biased for these dubs, yet when they really entertain me so much (and there are OTHER dubs that I really like, too, such as LODOSS OVA, NADIA, FMA, and many many others besides), how can I NOT show my support?

Thank goodness. I really hate to come across like an elitist about anything. And yes, even Japanese VAs are not all "perfect incarnate" like I heard so many people claim. I actually had trouble going back to the seiyuu of Pazu and Sheeta after hearing the mature leads -- not because they were bad, but they sounded awfully... shrieky to my ears. At least Disney's VAs weren't quite as shrill.

PONYO isn't my favorite Miyazaki film, but I do agree that the dub was good, ending song aside. I find it odd that there are going to be two different voice casts for ARRIETTY. That means America may not get the British-recorded version. Which does make it a draw--I obviously DON'T like in Europe, and I can't import, either. Guess I'm gonna have to wait. :(

Sorry if it sounds like I'm preaching, but I personally don't think it's very fair that "actors" are considered inept "voice actors". I can get a little too... overemotional sometimes.

I actually haven't read the book of HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE (I know, I should--it WOULD be interesting to see how it compares), but I wouldn't really be surprised if it really DOES go into more detail. Lots of times when filmmakers adapt novels to film, some compromises have to be made, but that doesn't mean they can't be good in their own right (e.g. the Lord of the Rings films and even Harry Potter). But I definitely really think I should consider it, as I'm sure most of the events in the movie don't play out exactly in the same way as the film.

As far as NAUSICAA is concerned, I understand where you're coming from completely, although it's almost hard for me not to see it as a prototype of PRINCESS MONONOKE, as both films tackle the same issues and feature similar character roles (e.g.: Nausicaa=Ashi-taka, Kushana=Lady Eboshi but nastier, Kurotowa=Gonza but more sneaky, Asbel=San but not quite as ferocious or antisocial, etc.). I ultimately prefer the latter film, but NAUSICAA is an interesting starting point for Miyazaki. I'm glad that Disney released it uncut; I don't know if you've heard of the infamous first release of NAUSICAA and how it almost prevented Miyazaki's films from being released here, but luckily, Disney doesn't cut even one second from its releases. Granted, they DO add in some extra lines here and there and make occasional changes to the script (e.g. Jiji talking to Kiki at the end and the last part of Sheeta's speech at the end of LAPUTA), but to me, they're nowhere nearly as harmful as totally rewriting the story, changing the characters' names, or retitling the movie into something it's not. I doubt if any other company besides Disney would have given these films similar treatment, but who knows.

While I can understand some skepticism over some of the vocal choices for certain characters: e.g. James van der Beek, Anna Paquin, Billy Bob Thornton, and the Fannings, that Disney may have chosen them out of status, I personally think the whole "celebrities are bad voice actors" stigma is blown out of proportion. I didn't have any problem with James or Anna in LAPUTA, even if both probably were a bit more green compared to their co-stars and perhaps too mature (even then I never had the impression they were just reading words), I've never understood the backlash against Thornton or Anderson, and I personally don't see anything wrong with Dakota or Elle as Satsuki and Mei. Experienced voice actors though they may not be, I'm truly hard pressed to find anything about their performances that are "wrong" or "terrible" in any way, because they most certainly are not to my ears. It's OK with me if you had different impressions of these guys, but at least I'm glad that we both agree that Disney HASN'T done a bad job on any of these films thus far (even though I wasn't so crazy about the PONYO remix in the latter half of the credits).

Yeah, I've always liked the Behind the Voice Actors features on the DVDs. The older dubs may not be necessarily "bad", but they may also come across as rather dated. There are many older dubs which haven't aged so gracefully over time, particularly in the recording clarity and/or timing, as you mentioned. One of the many reasons I had so much trouble listening to the older dub of LAPUTA was because it sounded so out of date and not particularly lively... I'm guessing the only reason some people prefer it is because that's the version they saw first.

I actually own all the Ghibli Disney DVDs, but yeah KIKI, CASTLE, and WHISPER are among my favorite movies and dubs, each for different reasons. MONONOKE is another favorite of mine, as is TOTORO.

Yeah, those guys are really amazing. Interestingly, Disney isn't the only one who has made the Ghibli dubs.

Long before they got into the picture, Carl Macek distributed dubs for "Kiki", "Castle", and "Totoro", the latter of which was available on VHS for quite some time (before Disney brought in Dakota and Elle Fanning to do the roles for Satsuki and Mei). There are some people who think that these older dubs are superior to the newer ones, but I don't necessarily agree with that. I mean, the old dub of "Totoro" was fine for its time, but I really like Disney's version, too. Same thing with "Kiki". With "Castle in the Sky", however, I prefer Disney's version not only for its performances and rescore, but because it sounds much livelier and better made than the older dub, in which nobody really sounded like they knew what they were doing to my ears. I'm not sure if they had ProTools or something at the time they did the first dubs -- CASTLE, KIKI, and MONONOKE -- but whatever they used there obviously showed that these dubs were in another class. Actually, the man behind these first three dubs was Jack Fletcher, who has done other dubs such as VAMPIRE HUNTER D: BLOODLUST and the FINAL FANTASY games. He's no rookie at ADR directing, and I very much love his work on the dubs he did.

My particular favorite performances from those three dubs were Jiji, Muska, Dola, and Okkoto. Not that everybody else was second rate by comparison, but those guys really MADE the dub.

Well, believe it or not, I HAVE seen people attack them. But I definitely agree that these are very fine dubs. Mononoke isn't the only dub that I really adore from them. Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, Whisper of the Heart, and yes, Howl's Moving Castle are all on my top ten favorite dubs. I don't think they're perfect, but I could tell everyone involved was really trying, rather than just reading words. If there is a "lesser" performance in any of these dubs, they still sound passable to my ears. I don't think I've ever heard a truly awful Disney dub.

Nice to hear from another Ghibli dub fan. I really love these movies in English. Oddly enough, I got into an argument with someone who told me that the truth was the Princess Mononoke dub was a horrible dub because all the actors did a bad job. He said that it was because all the actors didn't have voice acting experience and as such, they were bad. I've even heard people tell me that Disney has ruined Ghibli with their dubs. I never hated any of the Disney Ghibli dubs, so it's surprising to see how anyone can be so adamant on hating them.

Hey thx for the friend request!!! So what do you think of UtaPri so far? Im actually sooo glad I decided to watch it out of the Summer lot cause its turning out way better than I expected!!! Whose your Fav guy!?!?! Mines Ittoki then Tokiya but probably just cause we've seen the most from them~ Im gonna wait til we get to know them all better before picking Favs~

P.S OMG You have Yumeiro as your 2nd fav!!! I love that show and I think its actually underrated :l It had an awesome plot and I loved the characters personalities and The "Cake Grand Prix" idea was sooo cute :)
