I started watching anime in 2013 and haven't looked back since. And I'm a relatively old dude compared to most here so I'm definitely not your typical Anime lover. I have no clue what the different types of anime is called so telling me a specific anime is ecchi or some other type wont tell me anything except I will probably recognize the word as an anime term. And I doubt I ever will learn (yes I looked it up but have already forgotten what it meant).
I joined this site simply to be able to check whether I've watched an anime before and to record what I thought of that anime so I can make an informed decision later whether I should bother to re-watch it. I binge watch a lot so many anime can be hard to remember 2 years later. It's something I appreciate to be honest even though it should probably also trouble me that I seem to have started a theme of me having poor memory... but like I said I'm getting old.
I always watch subbed anime since I've grown to absolutely detest dubbed Anime. For some reason English anime voice actors suck. Their ability to convey an emotional range is minuscule compared to the Japanese voice actors. I could be a lot more specific in trashing English dubs but whatever - there is no doubt in my mind that voice acting in Japan is a highly competitive profession compared to every where else.
I score according to the word MAL associate with the score (I.E. 8 = very good). So anything with a score of 5 or above is watchable in my book. Inflation in MAL's score system is most definitely a thing so I resist it to the best of my ability. A score of 10 should be almost unattainable in my humble opinion. Same goes for 1 for that matter.
Obviously my score is subjective and my taste can change over time and depend on my mood and frame of mind at the time. But I do believe I can recognize quality no matter what so my score will always be in the ballpark of what I will think over time.
I've been continually impressed by how much high quality Anime that already exist. Yes, there's plenty of crap and mediocre anime out there but when the mood strikes me it rarely takes me long to find something that I will enjoy. It almost seems like a bottomless well which is something that I highly appreciate.
Anime intro/outro music are most often pling plong elevator can muzak so I'm truly perplexed as to why so many reviewers seem to enjoy that so much (OP/ED?). But it can easily be skipped so I would not classify that as something worth complaining about. Some newer anime seems to improve on that account thankfully though. The outro of 3-gatsu no Lion's first part of the season is a example of absolute brilliance both in music and animation for instance.
I don't care if aspects of an Anime is cliche as long as I think it's done right - cliches became cliches for a reason. From the reviews I've read I realize there's many who approach anime from a pseudo intellectual stand point. I have no time nor patience to spare for such views. If the story in the anime is good and well executed and have believable or at least amusing characters I score accordingly.
Character development will always be a huge plus when done right but it is by no means a requirement for something to be good in my book. Example: No game no Life is a brilliant anime despite having zero character development and a loli sister whatever you call it going on. Oh and I'm in the loving Sword Art Online camp too btw.
I almost forgot: I would love to read Manga. Problem is I hate reading it on the computer or on my phone. I've been a comic book fan since childhood and read a lot of them. From comics such as Tintin and Asterix to old school Marvel/DC to John Difool and Heavy Metal and I miss it to be honest.
