I found this anime brilliant not only because the plot and setting/world was mysterious and interesting, but highly thought-provoking as well. From what I saw in your (monstrman's) anime list, it appeared you enjoyed slightly older anime aimed at an older audience, which this anime may not fall under, however I think this is a show anyone's interest can be satisfied if they enter with an open-mind! The anime contains one of the most well-written antagonists in my opinion (which I think you may appreciate), and the conflicting philosophies presented in the show still leave an impact on me. The anime is 24 episodes long, which is the average I believe, so I hope it isn't too long!
I considered recommending Great Teacher Onizuka, however that anime is about twice as long. If you ever get the chance - I'd recommend watching that as well. Its humor is similar to Golden Boy's (not as sexually explicit, I'd say), and the character is similar in that they're a free spirit who reforms people along their way through life
