Introduction:
Yu Yu Hakusho is truly, and I mean TRULY a masterpiece. I viewed through every second of this show and pure glee and joy wondering what was to come next. To me however, what I found to be the most enticing feature of this show, which nonetheless had an amazing narrative and cast, was the mighty man himself Kazuma Kuwabara, standing at 6’1 he truly was in my opinion the dazzling glue that brought the entirety of this amazing series together.
The Planting:
It all began in episode 1 when I saw his initial interaction with Yusuke, which may have initially come off as an annoying character, or antagonist but truly showed that he was a persistent man, and the wake only furthered this depth of enjoyment within the character, as we see Kuwabara the mighty man mourn for Yusuke. The moment that truly sealed the deal for me was the depths he was willing to go in episode 3 titled “Kuwabara: A Promise Between Men” in order for his friend to continue supporting his family. It truly defined his depth as a character, and showed that despite his rough and tough stature as well as his personality, he cared a great amount about those around him, and even then he still cared quite a bit for others. Even following this when he cares for Yusuke along with Keiko and Yusuke’s mom.
The Growth:
In the following arcs we see a depth in the character of Kuwabara, in which I personally couldn’t have been more happy about. We see him again following the initial events of the Artifacts of Darkness, in which he receives a boost in strength, and although not winning, he provides the motive for Yusuke to push through and overcome Rando. Sacrificing and putting the last of his power into a message that is used to motivate Yusuke. Without their intense rivalry, it would have been an endgame right then and there. Even then in the Beasts of Maze Castle Arc Kuwabara cements himself as an amazing character, he embodies the spirits of a man, and even if it would mean his demise he plans to act on these spirits, which is something that a lot of anime character attempt to portray, but he simply does it in such a motivating way, bringing up his peers along with him, to bigger and better heights. With his fight against Byakko cementing his ideals, as he stood and fought an opponent who was significantly stronger than him, even as his legs shook in fear, he put his might into that fight and ended up outsmarting said opponent,TWICE, as well as attempting to sacrifice himself, which luckily only half of that came to fruition. Not only do these two amazing moments within these beautiful arcs truly show the depth and true beauty of this character, but they cement his reputation as a true man. Which is only added upon in the Rescue arc following, in which he falls in love with the captor, yukina. He once again attempts to sacrifice himself to defeat an opponent significantly, and I mean SIGNIFICANTLY, stronger than he was at the time. Fortunately, once again he lives, and truly empathetic for the terrible actions of her previous captor, he apologizes to Yukina, on behalf of all of humanity, and attempts to clarify the difference within humans, as he claims to be able to show her the good side. Which is truly, one of the most moving things he's done, he knows she's been through alot, he knows the resent could be there, yet he apologizes and attempts to bring to light the greatness within people, and she states she knows, so he thanks her, thanks her for allowing this one horrible action by a terrible human, to not cloud up the greatness others have done.
