Gsarthotegga suggested I send you the resume of my recent Dracula and Frankenstein marathon. 16 movies and 1 miniseries about Dracula, 14 movies and 1 miniseries about Frankenstein, and one awful crossover.
So in case it interests you, just click spoiler.

ps: The original message was to Gsarthotegga, I'm just pasting it.

You mentioned anilist, have you ever tried mal graph?
I don't know which has a better database, but mal graph also show related entries - among other stuff

Yeah, at this point, I don't bother with the mainline stuff anymore at all, unless it looks distinct somehow. The Frankenstein novel to film transition probably did lose the most depth, and many of these are more like sci-fi spectacles than anything, with a cool set piece to give birth to the monster... and... that's about it. :P I've always wondered if the name mixup had anything to it other than the director or writer not caring to read the book. I think it's pretty common for them to not read it and get a (bad one, in this case) summary from someone. Pretty sure that was the case for Blade Runner, as I recall Scott admitting he hadn't read the book, but that's not so bad since I don't think he wrote the script, and it was quite a bit different in a way that a lot of people appreciate.

I was bored to death by The Witch (or The VVitch, lol). So the jump between that and The Lighthouse was really huge for me.

I think the best Lovecraftian adaptations/inspired would prob be the two you mentioned (The Thing has always been a favorite of mine). Endless was pretty weird as a horror comedy. I suppose From Beyond isn't too bad. Anime does it a bit too.

I know the feeling. It took me 15 years to finally drop One Piece, and I finished many other shonen just because I started them one day... I think I finally became able to drop stuff when I started digging deep into research and building a huge backlog of seemingly interesting things to watch and read. I stopped wasting time on what was boring me, now I just get super anxious because it feels like a lifetime won't be enough to watch/read everything haha

So, well, if you want to trade one trouble for another, there's how.

For Hellsing, It's the less serious part and differences in aesthetic and atmosphere that make me prefer the original. Konaka scripting as well. The Eggers Nosferatu might be interesting. I've never been that keen on him, but the Lighthouse had nice cinematography. He seems to be the big "serious" horror director now. Had no idea he did a remake. Yeah, the referentialness is now common with horror and it doesn't help, unless it's more of a comedy (maybe...). Yes, it's as you've said. This is why I don't tend to like the main horror entities. Werewolves, Frankenstein, vampires, etc. Their stories are too known and most creators do the same thing with them. Although most Lovecraft stuff isn't necessarily that good, it's quite popular largely because it prefers the unknown or at least some unknowns. Either spookier atmosphere or more complex story is necessary for vampires. There's also stuff more so from the perspective of vampires and their emotions and adaptation to that lifestyle, which can be interesting, but these reduce the mystery most of the time and often feel like druggie films XD. Or focusing on vampire culture because they have built a great underground society or taken over most of the world. Who knows what direction that will go, as it's not done often (or as often), and one can have wildly different interpretations. Owari no Seraph does something like that, but I haven't seen much of it, and it's more of a shonen action series than horror.

I've been seeing your updates on my front page, you getting increasingly bored with isekai stuff, and then a very good score for an arthouse short. I can't wait for the next episode hehe - I hope it's about Angel's Egg :P

Oh, crap! I forgot one. You definitely need to look into Mars Red if you haven't. It's an anime series. One of the best vampire series to come out in a long time and seems a lot fresher to me than most takes that I've seen. We're the opposite on Hellsing. I prefer the older Konaka one. Agree on Blood-C (bleh), Blood+, and B: TLV. I tried to watch Blood+ a few times and could never quite get into it.

I feel like the silent era tended to have the right mood, even if they could be hokey. Nosferatu and Vampyr I remember thinking were well done, but it's been ages since I've seen them. Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is also similar, though I don't think he was a vampire. Herzog's Nosferatu is also interesting. It has a glacial atmosphere that reminds me of the slower parts of the novel Nosferatu, like when the main is wandering around Orlock's castle. I feel like the standard horror film formula they often follow doesn't work that well, and they rely more deeply on atmosphere and mystery. Zombies don't really need mystery but atmosphere helps. I find vampire films are too small in scale and simple to offer much mystery. I also find Andrey Iskanov's Visions of Suffering remake quite interesting, but it's also trashy and low budget, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. I really don't like a lot of the popular vampire films now, but I did like Let the Right One In too.

I'm guessing something was lost from the LN to the anime adaptation, as it was lacking in world building for sure. They don't explain anything, which leaves it open to questions that can make their plan (if they even have one) look really silly. For example, litnerd has a review on it where he did the math for their village conversion (percent chance of a bitten human becoming a shiki, the population of the village, and how much blood they would need to survive), and it was completely unsustainable. Main reason I don't concern myself with this point, although it is a good point, is because it's a bit speculative (they might have been planning to grow to a set number and then drink only from blood bags or keeping humans around and periodically draining them without biting, like real cattle). There's almost nothing you can say about the shiki that isn't speculative.

My favorite vampire anime is Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, which I see you've already seen. A lot of anime feature vampires, but not many are "real" vampire films/series. I can't think of anything else in anime other than Vampire Princess Miyu and a few newer titles that I haven't seen. Vampires need a certain atmosphere to be convincing and hardly anything pulls it off well.

Hello! Thank you for your recommendation on Secret Santa.

I just finished it today, and I thought it was a good experience. It’s an anime that brings everything in the form of conversation—from the most random jokes possible to clever references to other works, and even breaking the fourth wall.

The characters have great chemistry, and their jokes keep things lively. Definitely a fun watch (´▽`)

Hope you have an awesome New Year!

Glad to hear you liked those. I was pretty much positive you'd like AE, so I had to bring it up again. The AE movie is quite impressive when it comes to the aesthetics, atmosphere, etc. Maybe puzzling as to how to interpret it, though. I was just now trying to recall who the composer was for RX, but it seems the only other anime credits she has are for the Code Geass films (aside from singing the theme song for Fujiko Mine Lupin spinoff series). That and RX are so different, lol, so I wonder what her CG compositions are like.

Oh, an oversight on my part is that when I chose not to include GITS, I didn't have a slot for Kenji Kawai. So I'd switch that out with Patlabor 2. Unlike with Berserk, I've listened to that many times outside of the anime and quite recently. Pretty sure you'd also like that if you like the GITS OST.

The song really annoys me. That aside, the biggest issue with the Death Parade OP is that it clashes horribly with the show. There are a lot of songs I don't especially like that fit a show well, so it's much easier to tolerate the song and maybe even enjoy it on some level. Plus, cutting the song down to 1:30 can work wonders for some songs that are too long or repetitive or have weaker sections somewhere along the way. I agree that it's professional, but I'd rather listen to keyboard cat or The Shaggs. XD

Key is completely forgotten on MAL. Strangely, back when I used IMDB more, I used to hear about it all the time.

I read a novel now and then, but I also tend not to read much fiction because fiction is something I use as a break from articles and non-fiction books (so fiction breaks are usually anime or film instead of reading). I also like audiobooks for fiction a lot and usually fall asleep to one as well. Do you like genre fiction for novels much? There's an unlisted YouTube channel I could send you that has a lot of interesting genre fiction.

I've never been much into ballet or watching musical performances. Outside of film or animation, music is a purely aural experience for me. I've probably seen some version of The Rite of Spring on TV a long time ago when I left the art channel on that played a lot of classical, but I'll check streaming.

I've actually listened to the Celeste OST without having ever played the game and liked it okay. I like a lot of rapidly looping music, if that's the main issue as an OST. But, also, with something like Berserk, I'm probably going by my memory of watching the series rather than listening to the OST in this case. So maybe that shouldn't count so much. I've tried a bunch of OSTs that I loved during a film/series with tracks that were too long or with voice overs and various things like that, so it's hard to say.

Uh, I'm trying to recall any accordion music in anime, now that you mention it. Other than a street music scene or a joke involving Europe. Spit and Accordion. Wow. XD

I can see the MGX OST being really effective in the series based on what I've heard so far.

I find some of the tracks work fine outside of the shows for Lain and Boogie, and I used to listen to them when playing chess XD. Maybe that's kind of weird... Main thing though is that both rely a lot more on sound design than other anime. I like the OP for Lain a lot but not the ED. I guess I'm not crazy about either for BP, but the OP grew on me for the visuals and sometimes the song kind of fits the tone of that (sort of...) but not the show as much. The ED is pretty throwaway, and the visual element is just a replay of scenes. Honestly, many corners are cut with EDs, and I have a harder time remembering ones that I like. What is your opinion of Death Parade's OP...? not sure if you've seen that, but I hate that song so much. I find it so weird watching an episode after hearing that. XD

I heard the Franxx manga somehow fixed the ending, though obviously that couldn't be of interest for you if you only like the score. I'm just wondering what possessed them to end it as they did. That's AoT ending-tier bad, lol.

I just saw your comment now, and thank you!

I remember not liking Jigoku Shoujo. Honestly, I have a hard time getting into most episodic series. Some of the bigger exceptions are Mushishi and Kino's Journey. Did you get into it as a horror fan? I want to say the sound element of the Uzumaki adaptation this season is fairly good too.

Same, there are a lot of OSTs I like that don't correlate with liking the series, especially for OPs and EDs, which are made more complicated because it's harder to separate them from the visual component, or I prefer to think of them as audiovisual rather than purely audio as I will sometimes do with OSTs. For example, I'm not sure how much I like the song for the Generator Gawl OP, but I like the visuals a lot, and they go well with the song. Kazuto Nakazawa always does cool stuff with the OPs he's attached to.

I respect Darling in the Franxx partly for its dumpster fire qualities, tbh XD. Can't remember the soundtrack too well, other than catchy OP or something. I'll try it after I send my comment.

I'm familiar with and like most of the OSTs you listed, except I can't really say anything about Nichijou or Spit Maiden. They're both on my PTW list. GITS and Akira are usually on any list I'd make, but I'll skip them this time. Metropolis also has a really strong usage of music. btw, have you tried Hosono's older non-Ghibli work? I find a lot of his stuff from Birth, Venus Wars, Arion, and etc., to be pretty good electronic music that's never mentioned.

OSTs:

-RahXephon (Incidentally, I recall there being some Wagner in the first episode. Borodin somewhere too)
-Angel's Egg (I recall suggesting this one to you, and based on the kind of composers you like outside of anime, I think you'll find it worth trying)
-Alien 9
-Night on the Galactic Railroad (this and the one below are essential for me because of Haruomi Hosono)
-Genji Monogatari
-Serial Experiments Lain (kind of hard to separate this and the one below from sound design, though)
-Boogiepop Phantom
-Hi no Tori: Houou-hen (absurdly underrated OST but fairly well known anime because of Tezuka)
-Berserk 1997 (wanted to add Susumu Hirasawa somewhere)
-Roujin Z (a film that involved Otomo of Akira, and the score is kind of similar to Akira, only maybe more restrained?)

I definitely liked some of the LotGH OPs and EDs, but there are so many of them so not sure which ones. I like Gunsmith Cats and Elfen Lied OPs a lot. I've heard most of the others but don't remember them well. I'd like to try the ED for A Kite because I also don't remember that, but the soundtrack seems a lot more effective than I remember. It's kind of easy to get lost in certain scenes when a score complements what's going on well. :P

OP/ED is insanely hard for me to pick, and I'd probably have to dig through a bunch of them. But I like these (Elfen Lied is also an easy choice for me, but I'll leave it out since you have it).

OP - both Record of Lodoss War OVA and TV
OP - Niea Under 7 (totally unique with those vocals!)
OP - Key the Metal Idol
OP - Dirty Pair Project Eden (holy shit the visuals)
ED - Now and Then, Here and There
OP - Witch Hunter Robin (feels like the most music videoish OP ever, lol)
OP and ED - RahXephon (think this has one of the strongest OP/ED combos out there)
ED - Aku no Hana
OP - Higurashi (feel like this does a great job of creating a kind of paranoid moe horror)
OP - Vlad Love (I think this is opening 1... great mood)

Edit: Yeah, I like the Franxx OST, and I'm kind of curious how it's used during the series, as it's way different than I remember.
