Sorry for the late reply. It has been... eventful on my end. A major incident in my city has shaken up the state and entire country and has become a bit of an international affair. I won't mention the gnarly details (just look up 'R.G. Kar case'). As a result, there has been a series of large-scale peaceful protests, spearheaded by medicos, and, due to being effectively a fascist state in all but name, the government has mobilised police forces to deal with the issue. It's just... unbelievable. I participate whenever I can and share stuff on my social media, I don't know what difference it makes. Other than that, life goes on ig.

gotta love his character (and his ego)

I'm more of a Myshkin person (The Idiot), which is why I naturally gravitate towards Razumikhin & Sonya's characters too. they're the antidote to Raskolnikov's nihilism, and, in the case of Myshkin, a symbol of perfect purity and innocence. a rather obvious way of communicating Dostoevsky's Christian ideal – he was a devout believer himself. the entirety of his work was his own prognosis of contemporary Russia that he believed was increasingly turning away from Christian spirituality in favor of post-Enlightenment (European) morality.

they're polar opposites, but I suppose one could find value in Raskolnikov as the more grounded character, in that he better represents the condition of being human, all too human. after all it's easy to fall prey to temptations and cynicism when you feel alienated in a society where cruelty and hypocrisy is the norm and where social structures reward immorality. that, and he was a broke college student too (literally me)

edit: some additional thoughts, forgive my yapping hahaha

a russian Napoleon-fanatic who's got the constitution of a frail medieval orphan yet swings the axe like a maniac.

well unlike Napoleon he hasn't accomplished remotely anything of significance. he thinks he's a great man, but as you would describe, has the constitution of a frail medieval orphan hahaha. motherfucker got hubris for days.

he debated why immoral people like the pawnbroker can freely commit to their corrupt deeds; he argued that men of greater superiority, himself included, have the power to take others' lives in the name of utilitarianism.

yeah, even by the end he was still deflecting moral responsibility for the murders he committed. it was the banality of evil in raskolnikov's mind that he is guilty of and justified his actions, way before he actually committed them.

the sticky tabs are enough indicators to know where i left off.

ahh oo nga pala nag a-annotate ka ano, my patience never allowed me to develop that habit kasi.

i have this habit of rubbing powder into my palms before i read. not only does my book smell like johnsons baby powder it becomes easy to flip through the pages.

masubukan nga haha; it reminds me of those pool players bago sumargo. totally unrelated, but still.

can't wait for your reaction when Raskolnikov meets the ultimate yapper in some bar, that shit took like 50 pages.

I remember this, it's structured akin to a church confession or sacrament of penance. but raskolnikov is guilty of being a sinner too, so this evoked conflicting feelings of disgust and sympathy from him - much like the rest of the novel's theme of duality. it's these things where dostoevsky distinguishes himself as a writer

it builds atmosphere in your work area too. pang-additional decor din siya para dun sa gusto iromanticize yung academia core nila (me) lmao.

wait I accidentally skipped this, but it's totally relatable. i even do short reviews on my story sometimes, although at the risk of friends teasing me for it (tirhan mo naman kami 'tol) hahahaha

i never really use those.

hindi mo bet design? or do you have your own way to mark your progress

the idea that old-looking books hold memories through their worn pages also seem rather poetic

you get it! well put.

delaying the process just feels fresh and well... secured.

I understand the necessity to do so, and I agree that it's nicer to keep books in optimal condition for the sake of posterity... now that I think about it, maybe I'm just not careful enough in handling my books.

consider getting another shelf should it be of concern to your growing collection.

hindi pa naman sya visible na problema. once I live independently, I dream of building my own library (libre lang mangarap) hahaha. but that is not feasible at the moment.

how about the end of Part 1? (page 106) that consists of 7 chapters already

yan! how about October 12? tapos na lahat ng exam ko nyan, and saktong Sabado. I might even read past Part 1, but we'll see. isingit ko na lang sa gabi haha
liesollete Sep 22, 6:16 AM
right, so how do we go about this? set tayo ng deadline when to reach a specific page count?

gusto mo by chapter? para incremental. pwede naman may deadline, i'll let you decide. medyo lenient lang para hindi rin nakaka-pressure. btw kakakain ko lang haha, I just received an announcement na sycnhronous mode bukas because of the transport strike.

except when i use them as makeshift bookmarks when i read outside.

hindi ba may free bookmark naman na kasama if you order it online? 'yung kulay orange.

about the yellowing, that's initially what i troubled over with putting books in sealed bags, thinking it might lock in moisture.

personally, I'm not too concerned about the discoloration since ganon din naman eventually kahahantungan ng libro, and there's a certain appeal with old-looking books. for me as long as it's readable and walang lukot, punit na pages, and loose binding (pinaka importante), then it's all good. also helps to buy acid-free papers, but that is a rarity with paperbacks na pinoproduce dito. I've never thought about using a zip lock, but I can see how it may work against dust and preserve the overall "freshness" of the book. but then again, if you read it over and over, it's hard to maintain that.

that's the most ideal way to do it, mas gaganahan karin magbasa if within reach yung book.

yes! I like reading between breaks, and kapag nakasalansan in an orderly manner, i think it subconsciously helps with my productivity lmao.

i share shelves with my siblings, but seeing na bara-bara sila magbalik at kumuha ng mga libro, i decided to have my own storage container for my books

I'm thinking of getting a personal shelf too, lalo at nagpipile up na naman since may mga law books din ako na binibili. kahit 'yung mini-shelf na assembled lang hahaha. I don't have a problem naman when it comes to sharing since my siblings aren't huge readers.
liesollete Sep 22, 4:21 AM
and yeah let's do a simultaneous reading. I'm really liking the McDuff translation.
liesollete Sep 22, 3:47 AM
if you still have the receipt, sabi nila you may go to the nearest branch to avail the service. 'di ko pa natatry myself, so hindi ko alam ang veracity ng claim hahaha. nabasa ko na kailangan sa room with cool temperature i-store ang libro to prevent yellowing, since humidity can damage the pages of the book, pati raw binding. kind of what they do at libraries. I keep mine sa working table ko though, mas gusto ko na accessible agad at hindi na pabalik-balik sa kwarto para kunin lol.
liesollete Sep 22, 3:41 AM
maganda pagkakacover nila actually, pantay and 'di nila dinidikit 'yung tape sa mismong balat ng cover, doon lang sa plastic. so hindi sya madadamage should you decide to remove it. nagmamake sense ba? hahaha
liesollete Sep 22, 3:11 AM
irrelevant, and you're probably aware of this already, but fully booked has a free (plastic) covering service for every order. pwede rin sya thru online, just contact the seller to avail. mine just came the other day and was pleased since I didn't have to go through the trouble of doing it myself.

It’s time to ditch the text file.
