I got into the exciting anime and manga world through my sister years ago, with my first animes Digimon, Pokemon, Hamtaro, and Sailormoon (though the english dubs I admit suck)
...And somehow I got into Naruto. It's really vague, but I believe my sister showed me that "Real Ninjas" clip on Youtube and I thought why not?
I had watched it every week in the English dubs and that used to be my sole anime until I grew up and started looking at new things. My first anime cons were full of excitement and confusion at the same time because I didn't get many of the jokes, and even met a cute half canadian guy at Portcon 2008...
The second anime series I really got into was Trigun. I rifled through a bunch of videos (alot of animes that I weren't aware of) in an old drawer and picked up this old gem. Vash the Stampede is an inspiration to me personally. =]
I do read mangas too though. I read Wish, Death Note, a bunch of others, and am reading Chibi Vampire now.
