Current favorite studios, in no particular order:

SHAFT (Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Negima?!, Pani Poni Dash) for sheer energy and artistic spark. Results can be mixed, and it's hard to catch everything without having your finger on the pause button, but usually worth taking a chance on.

KYOTO ANIMATION (Haruhi, Kanon, Air, Clannad) less for the quality of their animation (which is superb) than the quality of their dramatization. Not every studio could bring eroge/visual novels to life with such freshness, or make their casts appealing to a broad audience. That's KyoAni's greatest strength.

MADHOUSE (Trigun, Oh! Edo Rocket, Princess Resurrection, many CLAMP series) I'm stupidly nostalgic for. Their adaptations can be less than inspired at times, but when they do original work or adapt something without a source manga, their creativity and vast reserves of talent are inarguable.
