A long time ago, I wrote a bunch of reviews. I've not had the time to write reviews in years, but I appreciate continued comments about them all the same.
On "recommended": It looks like at some point, MAL took away the ratings breakdown (they used to let you score different aspects of a series individually, like animation, story, etc) and added rec/don't rec/mixed feelings as tags on reviews. And it looks like they auto-genned those tags on old reviews based on? The overall rating? Keywords? idk. It seems to me that these are largely inaccurate, but it also doesn't seem to let me manually change it, so, uh, thanks, MAL.
On ratings: Because I grew up in American schools, the grading system ingrained in me, unfortunately, sets 7 as "average." This severely limits flexibility in upper ranges and makes below-5 scores feel very exaggerated. As such, it's rare for me to score things below 5, but you can assume that 5 and 6 are both abysmal, failing grades. Similarly, 7 is my default score for feelings of indifference. 8 applies to majority of series I enjoy, while 9 can be considered favourites. I almost never score 10s. To be honest, I'd like to change this system and grade using the full scale more accurately, but for my reviews at least (as most of them are very old), this system applies.
