I always thought that the best part of the anime was between episode 14 and episode 26. I loved the plot and the characters. The last arc was really boring, there are too many fights. But I'm glad that you enjoyed it ^^

In Brotherhood, there are too many characters. I didn't feel attached to Ed and Al. Also, the ending was pretty forced, IMHO (SPOILERS):
-how did Ed understand that he could give up alchemy?
-Father was the Hohenheim's antagonist, and he wasn't somehow connected to Edward. The last fight was kind of forced. Also, I can't understand why Ed's friends didn't help him. I mean, he was fighting God!

I recommend FMA 2003. It's my favourite anime of all time, despite being an unfaithful adaptation.
