Well regarding the translation of TGCF there are a few out there, as well as an official licensed version. Apparently the best translation is by Suika and they actually licensed her translation and put it to print. (If you're curious, I have a digital copy of the series and could send some for you to see if the translation is better than what you have)
in general the translations of danmei can be so random in quality, some are just edited MTL (machine translation) some are people who do know Chinese... gotta get lucky lol
Gege is a Chinese word used to refer to your older brother. It can also be an older male friend. Additionally, the meaning can be flirtatious (such as in Danmei, aka Chinese BL)
Did you end up reading the novels like you mentioned?
In China, it's heavily censored. So awkward pauses and strange moments with the art are... Well... Probably meant to be more romantic scenes, but they can't out it there. I noticed some scenes like this whilst watching "The Untamed" as well, and I can only assume that's what it is. (those weird gaps etc I can imagine someone blushing, or a kiss, etc)
