Yeah, I do think the unscripted format did hurt my analysis a bit, so I'm gonna try to keep it tighter and more focused from now on. I have some ideas for some longer videos, but I'll probably start with shorter stuff for now. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it.

Yo, I actually ended up making a youtube video! It's pretty rough, but it's a start I guess.

Otomo is undoubtedly a very talented man, considering how spectacular both versions of 'Akira' look despite their differing mediums. I haven't looked into Otomo's bibliography enough to definitively say whether he's a better filmmaker or author, but I've certainly seen some high quality anime from him. 'Cannon Fodder' in the OVA 'Memories' is very good, and he wrote/directed the best short from 'Neo Tokyo' as well. I'm interested in seeing how that new 'Akira' anime will turn out with him directing, assuming it actually releases (and I actually have time to watch it lol).

When I said "these kinds of manga", I generally meant manga meant to address societal concerns and concepts, so 'Akira' is a pretty apt comparison since it's unmistakably a post-WWII story. I agree that 'Believers' does a slightly better job at characterization than 'Akira'; It manages to tie in its characters with its exploration of cults far better than 'Akira' does with its look into Nuclear Weapons/American Occupation. I think this results from 'Akira's focus on spectacle, but I'd still say the manga missed out on some characterization, and even the movie handled some of it better despite its shorter runtime. However, I also think 'Believers' misses out on having much of a 'plot', in terms of just being very slow for most of it. I don't think this really makes the manga worse, but it does narrow the appeal of it for sure.

essential post-Aum manga that explores the human side of the violent cult. It depicts the extremism of Aum/JRA pretty nicely while adding in the primal aspect of their practices. I like how it shows the positive side of joining the cult: escaping society. It starts from admiring the ocean view, enjoying some clams, and ends with sex 24/7 lmao.

The characters/plot are pretty strong, but I couldn't completely immerse myself into the story because I was reading it with the intention to study, trying to figure out all the parallels it's making to the real cults. I think I would've enjoyed more if I went into it blind. Though I did understand the ending a little better because I read about Aum beforehand, so that's nice.

I guess the only issue is how sparse it feels sometimes. The somewhat meta ending didn't help with that lol. Overall a very good read. 7-8/10
Tbh, I didn't go into this thinking that much about the overt connection to Aum, mostly learning about it researching it later. Regardless, I still rather liked it. I agree though, kinda sparse, but I feel like that happens a lot with these kinds of manga lol. Glad you enjoyed it.

last read this in 2019, decided to finish it because of the memes and nostalgia. Up until the arc when all might loses his powers, it was a pretty good battle shounen with great worldbuilding, creative powers, and fun battles. But after that arc it got worse and worse until it just became generic battle shounen slop with the final war arc. There's too many throwaway characters, the plot's spread thin asf, and worst of all are the boring battles that don't focus on the quirks anymore (just like most jump battle manga).

It's a shame because the premise is amazing. Season 1 of the anime is peak shounen, can't believe it's been 8 years T_T
Generally agree with this a lot. Don't know if I'll ever finish this because I've just gotten bored and am currently at ~150 Chapters.

Don't worry bro, I also have weird tastes. I'll check those two out.

I did make Youtube videos a long time ago when I was young. I've considered doing some more recently but I'm super busy with work and college right now so I'll just have to see. I'll let you know if anything comes to fruition though.

Your videos are really cool. Since you read a lot of manga, could you recommend me something to read? I'd offer to recommend you something, but you've read so much more than me.

Hello.

Just wanted to thank you for the insightful and interesting review of "Sayounara Minasan", it helps explain a lot of the "plot points" and makes for an interesting read.
I'll be sure to check your videos as well for more interesting titles.

Once again, thank you!
