This site really used to mean the world to me. I first started getting active in anime forums like this in the first covid lockdown in 2020. At that time, I was not in a good place mentally, I had lost contact with a lot of my friends and developed a fear of other people. I would only go outside at nighttime in order to avoid other people and I fell into a depression. At that time anime was my only safe place and I for some time I lost almost complete contact with the outside world. Every day, I would watch as much anime as I could sometimes entire 24 episode shows in a day. Back then I didn’t actually care about what I was watching, I just wanted to watch as much as I could to fit into this anime fandom and I didn’t want to think, don’t think about what I am watching and don’t think about my real-life problems. That was until I watched Evangelion. I had already watched the show prior when I wasn’t as much into anime and though I enjoyed it, it was only now at this time that I was truly able to understand its meaning. Its final message of seeking out real human connections and not running away from them in fear of getting hurt really resonated with me and it changed me for the better.
I now started to appreciate anime on another level not only as a means of consummation (is that even a word?) but as art that can impact another person's life and change it. I also started to get a lot more interested in the craftsmanship and the culture behind it. And most important of all I also started to seek out deeper real human connections and was able to meet new people and establish deep bonds with them. To this day I hold Evangelion and also Kare Kano very close to my heart.
Nowadays I don’t consume that much anime anymore as I am quite busy with real life. I also try to express myself through art and maybe one day I will be able to create art that changes another person's life like this medium changed mine.
But I will never forget this medium and this site and what it did for me. Never.
Yo, how's it going Jean? I've been doing well all things considered. I have been thinking of wanting to send out a message or something, but I thought to wait until you replied to our discord messages. I wasn't sure if that was still something you wanted to do or not, but I'm glad you reached out to me! Ah that's great to hear. I've been watching Bleach, a story I read back in 9th grade and I'm reliving that a bit by watching the anime. Hope you're doing good as well, and I look forward to talking to you again!
Thank you! That means a lot to me. Also, I'm sorry if I forget to wish you a happy birthday. I thought I did, and I'm not entirely sure if I did, but apologise if I didn't.
Either way, thank you very much for the good wishes!
I'm glad you're enjoying Karas! It's a lot of fun and a really enjoyable tokusatsu, especially for the time and its CGI quality. I do hope you enjoy Bokura no too - it's much more tonally different than Karas I'd say but still seemed up your alley!
Thank you for recommending me Giant Robo, I really enjoyed it! After reading the synopsis and seeing the opening I’d expected this to be some kind of monster-of-the-week super robot show where Giant Robo would take on different mechs each episode. But that’s not at all what I got, which is a nice surprise. The wuxia magical elements were also very unexpected but definitely welcome. Mecha + wuxia martial arts is the combination I didn’t know I needed!
I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about Kusama Daisaku for being too whiny but I didn’t have any issues with that. On the contrary, I liked his character arc and can definitely see the parallels with Shinji from Evangelion. The rest of the cast was very unique as well, with some solid character designs. I’d seen images of Von Vogler and Shizuma before, and thought they must’ve come from a Osamu Tezuka manga. Guess I was wrong!
I felt like each episode blew the previous one out of the water, and the ending especially got to me. While Vogler's plan was kind of predictable, it was a very poetic end to things. Too bad a sequel was never made.
All in all this is an 8/10 for me. The art, animation, character designs and themes are this series’ strong point. A late Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you, and enjoy the warm winter weather!
Yo Jean,
I've been doing good. Mostly just waiting for school to end we're having less and less work. I was wondering what happened, but I understand how you promise yourself to do something and life gets in the way. What an interesting visual novel you've been playing lol, but I've also been playing a visual novel called Katawa Shoujo. No worries about all that. I understand you're trying your best, but just do things at your own pase is all.
Like I said, waiting for school to end with all the exams and stuff, but I've also been trying to get closer to people even if it hasn't been working out all that well.
Welcome back Jeanbokai! It's great to see you again!
I answered your question on discord, but I hope to be able to talk to you more again!
Have a great day! <3
