I am a student in Queensland Australia. Relatively new to anime but have found a great love for it and many attachements to my 2 long running favourites, Naruto (shippuden) and One Piece, although i have watched and enjoyed a few others. Anime provides a lot of joy and many 'feels' although it does retract on social life and effort put in to other, important things like education and other virtues/values

That scene when Luffy easily destroyed the Pacifista, a feat their whole crew struggled to accomplish pre time skip was amazing. It really showed how much he had improved. Of course that's to be expected since he was trained by Rayleigh. Also Zoro was trained by Mihawk. Even though the power gap is large compared to pre time skip it's believable considering who they were trained by. Plus Haki increases the power of your attacks by lot.
When Luffy knocked out those 50,000 fisherman it was epic. I heard someone say that Shanks Haki could knock out every single person there including Hody and his right hand men.
One Piece is my favourite series. I wonder how much longer it will last. There's still so much left to see and discover. I heard it's only half way done. Hope it's true.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHbDD23Arhk - skip to 2 minutes. I've never seen a fight like this. The way Luffy screams and the echo effects WOW. An amazing arc 10/10.
One Piece - The very very strongest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4J7K3yacig4 that scene with zoro OMG I literally had to get out of my seat and go for a walk (to much epicness for even me to handle). I telling the truth I literally got up and shouted at my screen "YOU FUCKING BADASS!" LOL.
You're lucky you get to have such meaningful conversations with your friends about anime. I can't begin to explain how passionate I am about anime. I tried getting two of my friends into anime. I started off my recommending Attack on Titan. It's an awesome series. A lot of people in the west have this idea that anime is childish including me. I wasn't able to appreciate the story telling in anime until I gave it a chance. My close friend hyped Naruto so much that I eventually gave it a shot during a boring summer. One of my friends said he wasn't really into anime. My best friend said he thought it looked really cool but he's not the type to invest time in these things. I can only talk to people like you. I can't believe how similar our tastes are. Avatar was actually the first animated series I watched. I watched it a lot as a kid. In year 10 I decided to watch it again and was amazed by how good it really is. As a kid I wasn't able to appreciate it as much as I do now.
12-24 episode series are good as well but you don't develop as much of an attachment as you do towards shows like One Piece or Hunter x Hunter and once you do there's only 4-10 episodes left until you finish it. Anime is an art in all aspects in my opinion which is why I love it so much. The story, the execution, scenery it's just all perfect, the characters are also great. Western shows for example can have many problems which can ruin the immersion of the show. Like cast changes, acting etc. Which is why I prefer anime > real life. I love great storyline and anime tend to tell them the best.
There are literally hundreds of series out there that are 9/10 or masterpieces. I've seen about 30 anime. At first I thought that was a lot but I've seen people here who've seen over 500. Feels like a journey having all these series to watch.
Since you like long running series here are some great ones:
Fullmetal Alchemist
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Cross Game - very emotional. Only seen one episode I already was experiencing the feels! It's got a great score on this site as well so it's bound to be good.
You're 6 ft 7!? Wow. I'm only 5 ft 7.
Aces death was very emotional especially when he said his last words to Luffy. Seeing Luffy completely broken after Ace's death just made the scene a lot more impactful. I was literally shaking. Unfortunately Ace's death was spoiled for me so there wasn't that much of a shock factor but it was still a an emotional scene. Whitebeards last words were very impactful as well. "ONE PIECE DOES EXIST" I got the biggest F*** shivers after that line. I love how anime can get you attached to characters.
Hunter x Hunter is a must watch. It's surprisingly dark and a lot of blood in it. Just imagine One Piece epicness without censorship meaning way more blood.
No Game No Life is awesome, fun, crazy and hilarious.
Yu Yu Hakusho if you like battle series and cool fights like Naruto.
If you loved Deadman Wonderland I seriously recommend Gantz. It's easily just as gory as Deadman Wonderland and has a great story. It involves the main character put in crazy situations trying to survive. I recommend the Manga since it's much better than the anime.
