I think I blame the artwork a little bit for the lack of the characters' emotion. True, the art isn't the best in the world--- but it isn't the worst ever. It's hard to tell whether they're happy or not because the artwork is lacking.
But if you want a much better version of the series, I really do suggest that you read the manga. Seeing as you've seen Molders Hen, I bet you didn't like it that much as well. There's more to it in the manga than in the anime.

True, the episodes might have been dragged out, and the manga is obviously much better, but... I have to disagree about the characters. I think they were handled pretty well, seeing as it was the 19th century. You just can't expect people to change much then, too much was going on (social class, etc.).

too cliche and cheesy, maybe if it has 12 episode's i might of watched it but 24 episode's for this type of anime isn't needed
