When the core aspect of an anime fails to the point that you strongly regret spending your very limited free-time on, that's more than enough reason to give an anime a rating of 1, and it certainly isn't out of spite. The vast majority of people, yourself included, gave this anime a rating of 10. Are you telling me that this means that all of you thought that every aspect of it deserves a 10? I'm pretty sure that most gave it a 10 out of sheer enjoyment value, I should hope so at least otherwise I would start questioning the average IQ of MAL's audience.
I spent a decade watching Game of thrones and I was so passionate about it, it was the best thing ever when it followed the events of the books. But then the show writers ran out of book material and absolutely butchered the show by writing their own material for the last couple of seasons. It was was so bad that many of us felt like we had wasted a decade of our lives, and we wished we had never come across the show to begin with.
I feel the same way about Frieren. We may never see eye to eye on this matter, but at least I'm trying to be the voice of reason in a sea of people singing Frieren's praise as though they'd never seen another anime before, in the false hope that someday its rating would actually reflect the quality it delivers.
Let me use his analogy: when you're interested in a girl that at first seemed to have quite a few decent qualities. She's cute, funny and you both love anime for example. But then you find something about her that for you is an automatic deal breaker, like she cheated on your best friend, or has a body count of 100 or anything that's deal breaking in your opinion. Then suddenly all those nice qualities she has don't matter in the slightest anymore.
It's exactly the same here. Like I said in my review the first few episodes were enjoyable, and the show does have some decent qualities. But that was until I got to the issues that made it totally irredeemable in my eyes, some things you just cannot get over. I believe we all have triggers that are just unforgivable and of course they differ from person to person.
SAO might just be a guilty pleasure, or it's just an anime that resonates with me on some levels that I could try to put into words, but that could start getting too personal. The point is I wanted it to deliver on certain points and it did with flying colors. Frieren simply did the opposite.
When an anime sets out to achieve a certain goal and does it, that accounts for a lot. When I'm in the mood for a certain type of anime, be it a romance or a slice of life or whatever you're in the mood for at that time, and the anime delivers what you expect it to, then that's what matters the most. SAO doesn't pretend to be something it's not and I for one had a blast watching it so I gave it a 10 out of sheer enjoyment value. Isn't that what it's all about after all?
Frieren pretends to be a deep and thought provoking anime about an elven mage on a journey beyond the main journey, but fails to deliver on so much of what was promised that any semblance of enjoyment from watching it is impossible if you're not just watching for the visuals.
When your 1500 year-old elven mage protagonist that was trained by Flamme herself is as clueless as a 16 year-old teenage girl, whereas her teenage human hero party members are as wise as the sagest savants then the story you're trying to tell crumbles as soon as you watch the show beyond the shallowest of depths. I haven't even talked about all the other issues with the world building, pacing and incoherencies of the show.
Some people can ignore or not even notice such glaring issues, and if you're in that group then I envy you. Some of us however simply cannot get past such core plot holes.
if you do not mind can i ask you a few questions/ opinions.
what do you feel about Niijima first let me say i thought he was a jerk at first but later in the anime that it seems like is started to like kenichi and the other member of is alliance/care about them more. am i kinda right or wrong about this. i am not saying he the niceist people but i think he cameing around.
what do you think about hermit is he good or bad. although he joned yomi i think/hope he is still good because he have been used before and i think his master is good. but hey that just me.
what do you think about Berserker when/if will see him again we will probably but when is the question. will he be good or bad if looks like he will proberly be bad. but who knows he may turn good it possable right.
what do you think about Loki when/if will see him again we will probably but when is the question. will he be good or bad. i guess/openion is he might turn to good and might even join Shinpaku because it seems like he wants to be about of a strong group. Niijima will not let him do what he tried with Ragnarok because they use the same tricks to win. if they can work with each other Shinpaku could become unstoppable just because assuming he still haves the group members he did with Ragnarok. on a side note i hope we can at least see number 20 with out her goggles i think she good looking like loki is without his goggles on. Loki is one of my faviote people I know he minor but that’s why I ask sorry.
sorry for being long in this you can respond if you want but if you do not it not a big deal either so do not worry about it. it up to you
