That's all good, thank you for trying and I hope you enjoy reading Paljae!

Hello, I just noticed that my all-time favourite and literally one of the best BL (in my opinion), Paljae Child of the Winter, isn't on MAL. Do you think you could add it? Please?
Also if you haven't read it yet, I recommend it!

Replying to old comments now that I have the time! Sorry was super busy with work and stuff! 😅
Heya ♡〜(ゝ。∂)

Ahah that’s exactly what happened to me! I was like I hear this Dazai guy is pretty popular, let me look at all the characters… 👀 who is that? Love him already, smol angry ginger guy is my fav now, don’t know anything about him but I can feel it! Then he was introduced and I was 😯, then he interacted with more characters and I was 🥰, backstory 🥹… lol

I’m feeling so validated right now! Glad we have this in common and I’m not the only one XD

Also hope you’ve been alright!
And love your profile!! Really digging the Halloween aesthetics and the black and white 🖤🤍

This is reminiscent of Banana Fish, where the author refused to label manga BL for decades because she didn't want to pigeonhole the story into a "gay male couple crime drama". Which, ironically, didn't stop the manga from becoming a cult reference for the genre and eventually receiving quality adaptations due to its influence on the industry. At the same time, MariMite's author initially agreed to tag her franchise yuri, as she believed that although it was not a lesbian story in the full sense of the word, such a tag would make the work easier to promote and understand for its target audience.

There is also a difference between whether the authors have real intentions for a romantic ending. For example, if Yuri on Ice really went for romance, then Hibike took the obvious route of interpretation, although Liz and Blue Bird sold tickets with a booklet for yuri otaku.

I think there is a difference in approach. While Western shippers expect canon and some kind of final clarity, the Japanese often love tease, subtext and the possibility of interpretation. Especially since it helps keep the show appealing to an audience that isn't interested in yuri. So you can see a bunch of shows without romance, but with noticeable pairings with quasi-romantic dynamics. Shonen Jump has used similar designs since the 00s with male characters to expand the female fanbase without scaring off the male one. I don't know if you've watched it, but there is a reverse harem show with fujoshi MC and they sometimes explain some of the nuances of Japanese slash shipping.

Well, it's that type of "modern yuri" where the characters basically just have a very strong and idealized friendship, but the writers leave it up to you to interpret or read things however you want as entertainment. For example, the NOIR writer promoted sci-fi yuri and said that whether a show is yuri or not depends on your desire and intentions. While director of Princess Principal said in an interview that it is canonical that the girls' relationship is friendship, but they will not completely deny or confirm their relationship, so that the viewer can read it as they wish.

What about formally non-yuri shows whose writers have stated that whether they are GL or not is up to each viewer? I know at least 3-4 of them.

Don’t think that I’m trying to intimidate you or try to convince you to delete something, I just encountered this myself when I created new shonen shows stack. In fact, I find your stack to be a rare example of a good yuri collection. You could also add G-Witch.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
