Hey, I've decided to give Devil Lady anime a shot. I've read in reviews that it starts off in a bit of monster-of-the-week manner, so I've kept watching and tried not to get discouraged by that fact, knowing that the plot eventually picks up.
I'm at episode 10 now, could you hint me (without spoilers) around which episode does it lose the monster formula? Need a checkpoint to look forward to :)
Well, you can't really know for sure unless you try and watch it. I still have yet to watch all of his works to see if Lain truly is his best. For now, it is my favorite Anime. Yeah, Digimon Tamers. He also worked on an Anime called Mononoke, going to try and watch that too. I finished Armitage III today, which was also directed by Konaka, and I thought it was a good 7/10. I hope you get to see Lain some day, it is very dark and eerie.
For now, I will watch the OVA movies you suggested. Thank you.
So, should I read the manga or watch the Anime for Devilman? What would you suggest?
For me, I think I am more interested in Devilman lady since it is directed by Konaka, and Lain is my favorite Anime of all time. I want to watch more of Konaka's stuff to see if he lives up to his reputation or is just a one hit wonder with Lain and nothing else (Well, from you, you really liked his works and consider him to be a great director, so you definitely think he created a couple of great shows)
I am actually quite surprised you have not seen Lain, his most famous work.
Yeah, you know about the original and it's characters more than me, so you would immediately notice the changes Crybaby attempted to do. You are also a big fan from what I can gather, since you have Nagai as your favorite person. Crybaby was actually my first time seeing anything related to Devilman from Nagai. I figured a ten episode Anime that can be finished in a day's time would be good entertainment, and I want to finish all of Yausa's Anime, so I just put Crybaby on and started watching it. I am not interested in watching the original Devilman right now, simply because it has a huge number of episodes to be honest (Yeah, I know 30+ is not much, but I am not in the mood for shows that are longer than 10-13 episodes as of now)
I will check out Devilman Lady though some time in the future because it is directed by Konaka. He scared the shit out of me with Lain, especially after episode 6 onward.
I think I am going to give Devilman Crybaby either a 6/10 or a 7/10. While it had some issues with characterization and the second half being all over the place, I think that it also had good stuff going for it. Great animation and production values, amazing soundtrack (Judgement is a banger), and I liked Akira as a character. I think I am going with a either a 6 or a 7, still conflicted.
I don't go by ratings on here so the rating isn't a problem to me, some great anime like Dallos are even lower than it and I liked Dallos a lot. Hearing it's standalone means I'll move it up on my plan to watch and I'll go in with an open mind. Thanks for the heads up.
I do plan to get into the other Devilman works but I don't plan on going right to the ...kinda sequel. I heard the adaptation for lady isn't great and I'd like to watch the original OVA and original series of Devilman as well as read the manga at some point possibly. I'll get to it but after the Devilman Crybaby filled week I had I'm going to take a break from the franchise for a bit. When I do I'll certainly post my thoughts on it. Glad you liked them. :)
