I really hope there more Applejack episodes, and more Trixie. I know Derpy Hooves is canon now so i'm anxious to see how well/bad it turns out.
Though when it comes to arcs, I can't help but love Avatar :) That was such a great series and I'm so sad it had to end of the abomination that was it's movie >_> I wish more shows could adopt the concept that cartoons can have plots too!
Out of curiosity, what led you down this avenue in the first place? I've been watching anime sparsely for almost a decade now, but only really started investing heavily into the medium three years ago when I checked out both Death Note and Code Geass back-to-back. Yeah, that threw me for quite a loop; those series' are arguably the definitive pair of gateway anime for anyone looking for an easy in. Stupidly engrossing and entertaining and packed with great characters, even if parts of my brain started atrophying at all the gaping logical whiffs and plot contrivances. Going off of your Top 5 list, I'm guessing you liked 'em as well.
And if you liked Geass, then I heartily recommend Baccano!, which boasts an equally stellar cast of characters and is a head-banging rollercoaster ride of gore, violence, and wickedly clever storytelling. The remarkably unique kaleidoscopic narrative is something of a hallmark of author Ryhogo Narita, as is his ragtag crew of eccentric screwballs. I mention this only because I see you're planning on checking out Durarara!!, which is also based on a novel series penned by Narita and can easily be thought of as the spiritual-successor to Baccano!. Basically, if you have the option, you should watch Baccano! first.
You mentioned that you're somewhat of a sub-purist, but I heavily recommend the dub here since while the Japanese track features an all-star cast of seiyuu, the English cast gives their roles period-appropriate accents and mannerisms--it's set during the Great Depression in gangster-riddled New York. Sure, it may be a Japanese production, but if Mafia goons are busy ventilatin' each 'uttha on the mean streets of the concrete jungle in the 1920s, Japanese voices just seem jarringly incongruous. Just sayin'. By the same token, Durarara!! is set in present-day Ikebukuro, Tokyo, so you're scot-free there.
So, you were put off by the lack of tangible romance in Spice and Wolf, eh? Not to kickstart the hype engine, but...the second season is likely going to be right up your alley. *cough*holoxlawrence*cough*
Squid Girl is getting licensed so I may check that out at some point.
Do you have any particular tendencies when it comes to choosing what series to watch? I tend to favor uniqueness and a strong cast of characters over stuff like plot, pacing, and visuals, or writing. If a series can fulfill the first two criteria, then I'm sold, hence why I love series' like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Oh, and feel free to comment on/ask about/discuss anything, even if it's not anime. We did start this discussion on a video game message board, after all. Low-key, but my favorite game is Persona 4 and there's an animated adaptation coming this Fall!
School-related stuff: EE is rough, though it may be just because I don't have the brain capacity to survive its rigors. Good luck with whatever field you choose to pursue.
You mentioned Ano Hana and I see you gave it a 10. I wasn't actually too fond of series, at least from a personal enjoyment point of view. Ano Hana certainly earned my respect for its wholly unique premise and the deft, delicate strokes it used to paint coping with death as an adolescent, but I was never emotionally-invested in the series. While the characters were complex and interesting, I never found myself rooting for them. There was an uncomfortable disconnect between the level of sophistication in the series--the dialogue in particular carried untold shades of meaning--and the characters' ability to channel such an elaborate script as naturally as possible. For me, it just didn't seem believable. But, I'm clearly in the minority there. And I gave it a 9 regardless, because damn it, I've never seen a more brilliant way to frame the concept of 'moving on' in the wake of a life-changing tragedy. Any reason you liked it so much?
You also mentioned Spice and Wolf, which is another favorite series of mine (though you only gave it an 8). The prevalence of Holo (Horo; whichever you prefer) is hard to ignore as well. The dialogue, in particular the playful banter between the two leads, is simply unrivaled and something of a piece of art in and of itself. The second season is definitely well-worth watching; I'm probably going to pick it up on BD/DVD (combo pack!) soon after it releases. I like the dub--J. Michael Tatum actually fits Lawrence way better than Jun Fukuyama, though Ami Koshimizu's Holo is, well, one of the most stunning performances in voice acting, period so I will inevitably be (re)-watching both tracks.
In case you hadn't noticed, I favor long-winded posts over short ones. There's a lot of stuff on your list that I'd happily comment on/inquire about, but this is getting pretty long as is. I guess I may as toss out some token questions:
Aside from Ano Hana, have you seen anything that's aired recently that's really caught your interest? I noticed you're one episode into Steins;Gate; that's a series that starts slowly but spikes expotentially 'round the halfway mark. Definitely worth continuing if you can spare an ounce of patience here or there.
Any series you'd recommend? I'm a slice-of-life fan, but my tastes are pretty indiscriminate so I'll watch anything, just so long as it's of decent quality and isn't a fanservice slosh-pit.
Again, nice to meet ya! Incidentally, EE major, going into my fourth year.
Ooh! Another good show was Pirates of Dark Water! I know the shows that I listed may have been before your time, but Pirates I remember being on (or just before) Toonami. I lament it's cancellation :(
PPG and Foster's used to be favorites of mine when I watched TV with more frequency~ Thanks for all the info :3
