Oof..... I'd have to know exactly what about it made it so painful for you to really explain why certain aspects of the show worked for me while they fell flat for you. Basically, the main draw of the show for me was Chitose, the protagonist, being an absolute idiot to comedic effect. I don't know if idiot is the right word though? She's just a bit overconfident and she learns a lot by the end of the show.

Chitose is extremely cynical of the anime industry, as am I. I could relate to her in that regard, and I found it really neat how the entire show focused on anime production from a cynical angle as well. I also loved the character Kuzu, he was a joy. The art and animation in the show was also very pleasing to me.

Idk, perhaps Girlish Number was just not your aesthetic. Not every anime is made for everyone.
