2018 THINGS:
Steins;Gate 0 is terrible. it's so boring and badly written and just... painful to watch. Especially in comparison to the original. I hate seeing it as a top-ranked anime. It's like, people just rated it because of the name. At best, it deserves an overall MAL score 7.5. Although my personal rating is like a 5. That may even be too generous.
CASCA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overlord is awesome. And I mean the entire franchise, but the anime has reignited my interest. So much hype for the Dark Young!!!!!!!!
OPINIONS THAT MAKE ME AN INSUFFERABLE SNOB:
Kimi no Na Wa (movie) is beautiful but kind of overrated. I mean, something about it always felt a little shallow... Although maybe a better way to put it is that Miyazaki works seem to have this tremendous depth and symbolic power... which Makoto Shinkai works seem to lack... Which doesn't make Makoto Shinkai works bad... it just means they haven't reached the level of Miyazaki films.
Vinland Saga (manga) is mediocre. Anybody who compares it to Berserk doesn't get what makes Berserk stand out so much.
Code Geass is over the top and it DOESN'T WORK. Also I (usually) hate mecha.
KonoSuba is overrated. It's still a decent comedy, but it gets extra hype because it "dares" to have MC's with intolerable personalities.
Akira is a hot mess. A beautifully animated hot mess.
Devilman (manga) and Neon Genesis Evangelion (original anime) are also hot messes. But they're hot messes with a distinct, beautiful, almost tragic soul.
Devilman Crybaby (2018 anime) is an even better hot mess than the original manga. It takes the soul of the original manga and translates it perfectly into something for the modern viewer. That includes the bizarre pacing and awesomely bad ending. There's something very raw... And perhaps a better writer could have refined the story into something "better", but I think that the (unintentional) bad writing in and of itself helps the story. I say unintentional because I don't think any of the bad writing was done as an intentional artistic/stylistic choice. I think it simply wasn't fully thought through. But somehow, these imperfections just make the whole thing even more beautiful. Not like Picasso's cubism, or French impressionism... More like Avant Garde jazz or noise rock.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes (the old OVA) is a masterpiece.
THINGS THAT EVERYBODY ELSE ALSO THINKS:
Gintama (anime) rocks. (hidden snobbery: I actually prefer the episodic comedy to the more dramatic storyline)
Berserk (manga) is a masterpiece.
Jojo's is a masterpiece.
All the Monogatari Series are works of art. It's the only instance of ecchi I've seen that actively makes the show better. Shokugeki no Souma is the only other that show that comes close to pulling this off, but it's not nearly as intelligent or well-crafted, and is frankly more of a clever gimmick (although to be fair, SnS isn't trying to be smart, it's just creatively self aware. But then again, the SnS manga is starting to deteriorate...).
STUFF THAT NEEDS MORE RECOGNITION:
Katanagatari (anime). SO amazing.
Shigurui is brutally awesome. The manga gives the full story, but the anime is still fun.
Dorohedoro (manga) is a wild ride. Art is messy but it works
Soul Eater (anime) is so good! Although it's rated highly, I feel like everybody forgets about it. It's not quite as "mature" as Fullmetal Alchemist, but I honestly think it's just as good. Being a little goofy/childish doesn't inherently make something worse. (Note: I don't think Soul Eater is better than FMAB. I think they are roughly equal... and I wish more people would take the time to deeply discuss/analyze/appreciate what is quite honestly a masterfully executed anime)
OTHER THINGS I'M COMPELLED TO SAY:
I love Kingdom (manga)! #Ouki4Lyfe #DemLips #Kokokoko
I love Golden Kamui (manga)! It's amazing! And it's not just for the beautiful men, although that is definitely something I enjoy.
I love Arakawa Under the Bridge (anime)!
I love SHAFT (the studio).
