I wonder about the year 24 group. I'll look up into it sometime.
Ah in the last comment I typo-ed, the actual book I was referencing was The Weight of Water by Anita Shreve. Faces of Water is by actually Janet Frame, I'm reading this atm and so far it's great. The latter is my first time reading surrealism, but the writing is quite exquisite. The former is really lovely, when I first read it back then I really enjoyed the storytelling and everything. The whole book is an atmosphere of melancholy and I live for it.
I sure will read it one day. I've heard great things about that manga. I think I've heard of Asper Kanojo, will check it out.
I think you should read Sora wo Daite Oyasumi if you haven't, it's a BL tragedy manga by the same author of Acid Town. It's only 7 chapter so I think you won't have a problem with it. I guess this manga isn't perfect but upon reading it I often find myself thinking back to it and referencing it several times to other people. Literally anything with an appealing premise will be enough to put an impression on me, even though the ride might not have been great. I would recommend Aku no Hana too but it seems you've already read it before!
I don't think I've watched enough movies to have found something quite impressionable yet, but I used to read quite frequently and really loved Faces in the Water by Anita Shreve. I know literature is too unrelated and random, but I think this would do for a good book recommendation.
I wouldn't say I'm the harsher scorer, I left some blanks since I haven't finished some. I think my favors change and along with it my scorings too, I definitely don't agree with some of the scores that I've set back then.
Ah the ambiguous ending pissed me off a lot and didn't quite offer a closure but I can't exactly say I hated it.
True, the story does have a few references to literature if I remember correctly. I agree too, the art really sucks but it's masterful in depicting their fall-out with reality and hallucinations, paneling was great in those places too. It felt like watching a movie with cool, shimmery effects. Inspiration of Zankoku? Where did you get this information, is there an article somewhere? I'd love to read it.
It's debatable but we may never know if it was intentional but I would go so far as to say Sandra's been emotionally manipulating Jeremy from the start. Threatening, insinuating she'll kill herself, going into hysterics, it certainly feels like it. No wonder Jeremy started to doubt if Sandra ever loved him at all.
Overall this manga really is a hit-or-miss, I personally didn't like it but at the same time I probably could make myself love it and turn against everything I disparaged about this work, because the initial premise was just that impressive. But it's undeniable to say that I truly took no enjoyment to reading this, I understand that some mangas aren't meant to be that way and are created for the purposes of bringing out a message, but I don't feel this way about this manga at all for some reason, and if there was a message, what is it really and is it meaningful enough? I do appreciate a lot of things about this manga though, it has a great storyline and other good aspects about it.
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll look it up.
Sure, I'd love to see what affinity we have in common.
I'm reading Zankoku na Kami rn, it's in your favorites isn't it? MAL said it had 55 chaps but it really had 80ish lmao. I'm on chapter 58 if I'm not mistaken...when I was on chapter 20ish I was so close to dropping the manga altogether. It was tantalizingly slow-paced, I couldn't stand the art too, but I decided to keep reading on anyway, and now I'm in too deep to quit. Very tragic, but to the point it almost feels pretentious, as far as I was concerned. Would love to discuss this manga with you. I'll be done with it pretty soon, and I'll begin Shimanami Tasogare right after.
Seems that Hagio Moto has a quirk for drama tragedy, at least that's what I got from what I read somewhere. If you have any recommendations from this author, I'd appreciate it if you'd share it with me! Let's see if her art style ends up growing on me.
Our manga affinity is near 70%! That's cool. Shame that your list is private, though.
It's not all bad though; there are certainly many kind people to outweigh the bad weeds here. Interestingly enough though, medicine attracts some very bizarre people...^^"
They're okay, I'm currently on a neurology curriculum which is unfortunate because there is so much learning on the physical exam that you appreciate in neurology with your patients, but it's not my favorite topic haha so it doesn't bug me a whole lot :P
I've only been to Toronto and it was really pleasant. I'm hoping to visit Ontario one day. How is COVID-19 in Canada right now? Is your area bad so far?
Yeah I've had classmates trample on one another to look good. It's not the nicest environment to work in and you need thick skin so you don't get so down about your day. And very true, it's not always the grades you make but the hands you shake (would advise against hand shaking right now though xD)
Hope you're taking the time you need for your personal reasons.
MS4, in my last year and applying residency in Sept
Also, sorry I've been awol, just work and stuff getting busy. Hope you're doing well
I don't think I have read any Tezuka stuff, but the way you talk about it makes me think I'm missing out. I did watch a little bit of the Dororo anime, but I wasn't enthralled and gave up on it pretty early.
I haven't really been reading a whole lot lately, just staying up to date with some of my currently-running favorites. Also reading some american webtoons. Have you ever looked at Witch Creek Road? It starts out as a like your basic teenager horror, hack-n-slash, but it starts getting really weird. Plus, the gore it just amusing in this one. Take a look if you get bored, it's still pretty new.

Also finally trying to read Home Sweet Home.I forget, did you read Bastard?
Anywhos, hope your exams went well! You started back at school yet? I just started last week, so things will probably start getting busy for me soon. I always enjoy manga more when I know I'm procrastinating something while reading it.
Anyways....yeah, Ichi the Killer is a great story, I also enjoyed Homunculus, another title by him. Be warned that for some reason this author just does NOT write satisfying endings, from what I've seen they're usally rushed, leave loose ends, unanswered questions, and just dosen't feel satisfying. But his storytelling style is more like a dark, philosophical meandering/exploration of the more grotesque aspects of psychology. Lots of gory or psychologically twisted scenes, but also pretty creative. And while I'm sure a lot of it is there for recoil or shock value, he frames it in a way that makes you think twice about certain concepts that we've been traditionally taught to just sweep under the rug.
Homunculus is about a homeless man (a businessman who suffers a fall from grace) who gets a hole drilled in his skull for money and develops the power to see a person's "true self", as it were. It's hard to explain. Explores lots of aspects of dysfunction and mental illness. https://myanimelist.net/manga/936/Homunculus
I even felt compelled to write a review for this title, esp. since the description basically describes nothing about the story. If you're interested. https://myanimelist.net/profile/Si-Ran/reviews
Ichi the Killer (japanese title Koroshiya 1) is more violent, with some really memorable characters, more action-packed than Homonculus, and just really drives home the excessive gore. Also it explores the psychological dynamics of masochism and sadism, which I found kind of thought-provoking, actually. https://myanimelist.net/manga/932/Koroshiya_1?q=koroshiya%201
His style can be rambling sometimes, but I find it worth the time, even if the endings don't wrap up in a pretty bow or just seem rushed. For him, I think it's more about the ideas put forth than the actual story arc.
These are the two titles of his I've read so far, with plans to read more, but from what I can see those are two of the better-known titles.
