Thanks for the links! I read the second link, not fully though bcs it was hella long, but that was pretty interesting. Hagio read and referenced a lot of literature, no wonder her mangas have depth and acute storytelling. I noticed most of her stories are pretty short. Anyway I'll probably read Hanshin from her next, truly I'm not sure if I'm really into sci-fi. With novels too I tend to read realistic or contemporary fic, and before that fantasy, thinking back I never really encountered sci-fi. I'm starting classics now though but Pride and Prejudice's obsolete language is really messing with my head.

I wonder about the year 24 group. I'll look up into it sometime.

Ah in the last comment I typo-ed, the actual book I was referencing was The Weight of Water by Anita Shreve. Faces of Water is by actually Janet Frame, I'm reading this atm and so far it's great. The latter is my first time reading surrealism, but the writing is quite exquisite. The former is really lovely, when I first read it back then I really enjoyed the storytelling and everything. The whole book is an atmosphere of melancholy and I live for it.

I sure will read it one day. I've heard great things about that manga. I think I've heard of Asper Kanojo, will check it out.

I've browsed through quite a lot of media but when someone asks me what piece holds a special place in my heart, nothing immediate comes to mind honestly.

I think you should read Sora wo Daite Oyasumi if you haven't, it's a BL tragedy manga by the same author of Acid Town. It's only 7 chapter so I think you won't have a problem with it. I guess this manga isn't perfect but upon reading it I often find myself thinking back to it and referencing it several times to other people. Literally anything with an appealing premise will be enough to put an impression on me, even though the ride might not have been great. I would recommend Aku no Hana too but it seems you've already read it before!

I don't think I've watched enough movies to have found something quite impressionable yet, but I used to read quite frequently and really loved Faces in the Water by Anita Shreve. I know literature is too unrelated and random, but I think this would do for a good book recommendation.

I wouldn't say I'm the harsher scorer, I left some blanks since I haven't finished some. I think my favors change and along with it my scorings too, I definitely don't agree with some of the scores that I've set back then.

Sorry for the late reply, I decided to finish Zankoku first before relplying so we could have a proper discussion. I wrote a review on this last night too, but I curbed a lot of things there as I didn't want to get carried away. The link to the review is on my bio if you're interested

Ah the ambiguous ending pissed me off a lot and didn't quite offer a closure but I can't exactly say I hated it.

True, the story does have a few references to literature if I remember correctly. I agree too, the art really sucks but it's masterful in depicting their fall-out with reality and hallucinations, paneling was great in those places too. It felt like watching a movie with cool, shimmery effects. Inspiration of Zankoku? Where did you get this information, is there an article somewhere? I'd love to read it.

It's debatable but we may never know if it was intentional but I would go so far as to say Sandra's been emotionally manipulating Jeremy from the start. Threatening, insinuating she'll kill herself, going into hysterics, it certainly feels like it. No wonder Jeremy started to doubt if Sandra ever loved him at all.

Overall this manga really is a hit-or-miss, I personally didn't like it but at the same time I probably could make myself love it and turn against everything I disparaged about this work, because the initial premise was just that impressive. But it's undeniable to say that I truly took no enjoyment to reading this, I understand that some mangas aren't meant to be that way and are created for the purposes of bringing out a message, but I don't feel this way about this manga at all for some reason, and if there was a message, what is it really and is it meaningful enough? I do appreciate a lot of things about this manga though, it has a great storyline and other good aspects about it.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'll look it up.

Ah the bots might be the reason for the large number of profile visits or anime/manga list views too.

Sure, I'd love to see what affinity we have in common.

I'm reading Zankoku na Kami rn, it's in your favorites isn't it? MAL said it had 55 chaps but it really had 80ish lmao. I'm on chapter 58 if I'm not mistaken...when I was on chapter 20ish I was so close to dropping the manga altogether. It was tantalizingly slow-paced, I couldn't stand the art too, but I decided to keep reading on anyway, and now I'm in too deep to quit. Very tragic, but to the point it almost feels pretentious, as far as I was concerned. Would love to discuss this manga with you. I'll be done with it pretty soon, and I'll begin Shimanami Tasogare right after.

Seems that Hagio Moto has a quirk for drama tragedy, at least that's what I got from what I read somewhere. If you have any recommendations from this author, I'd appreciate it if you'd share it with me! Let's see if her art style ends up growing on me.

I came across your account from a forum you happened to post in. I'd just recently finished Kamisama, Kisama wo Koroshitai and dang that cliffhanger! The circumstances behind the mangaka's disappearance may seem shady, what with the rather contentious topics he'd covered in his manga, but personally I believe that he just chose to quit being a mangaka. That aside, the manga was definitely an interesting read, albeit a brief one. I love the freaky tension in the earlier chapters- Makoto's erratic behavior- we're really conflicted about his character. Is he an ally? Did he really mean to let the man kill Chiho or was it simply just an act? We keep getting surprised by his actions and statements. He reminds me of Nakamura from Aku no Hana, who keeps surprising us with her actions and lines, they have quite a similar personality as well.

Our manga affinity is near 70%! That's cool. Shame that your list is private, though.

Haha, Garfield minus Garfield. Always a classic.

Yeah, one example that I have off the top of my head is a student intentionally telling his fellow classmate the wrong time that they were meeting up to see patients with the senior physician. So his classmate comes late and gets chewed out..it was pretty bad.
It's not all bad though; there are certainly many kind people to outweigh the bad weeds here. Interestingly enough though, medicine attracts some very bizarre people...^^"

They're okay, I'm currently on a neurology curriculum which is unfortunate because there is so much learning on the physical exam that you appreciate in neurology with your patients, but it's not my favorite topic haha so it doesn't bug me a whole lot :P

I've only been to Toronto and it was really pleasant. I'm hoping to visit Ontario one day. How is COVID-19 in Canada right now? Is your area bad so far?
iluvtofu Mar 28, 2020 2:28 PM
That's okay, a lot of learning is on the job so you'll get plenty of experience in no time :)

Yeah I've had classmates trample on one another to look good. It's not the nicest environment to work in and you need thick skin so you don't get so down about your day. And very true, it's not always the grades you make but the hands you shake (would advise against hand shaking right now though xD)

Hope you're taking the time you need for your personal reasons.

I see, yeah since we don't rotate through PACU necessarily unless you do some sort of pain rotation, I figured it may have been nursing

MS4, in my last year and applying residency in Sept

"Opinions are like b-holes, everyone has one." Some are just nastier than others. People fail to see that we're not all the same, which I really don't get since most people don't look alike. I've met almost close to no one that is similar to me in all facets of life. My best friends aren't even the same as me, we just share a few common interests. In fact, my best friend's political stance is the opposite of mine but he understands where I come from, I get where he comes from. We can talk about things without bashing each others views. Neither of us are extremists though. Then when we don't agree on something, we take it to the sticks(video games, where I destroy him). He also hates anime so IDK if I can trust what he says on anything(joking). When it comes to politics he knows a lot more than me, but he doesn't use that as a weapon to destroy me in disagreements. He uses that to educate me on the matter from both sides, even the one he doesn't agree with. That way we can have a civil discussion or argument about what we believe.

No problem man! I've been a huge tezuka fan for years and midnight has always been a potential top 3 manga for me! That's why I started translating it and I don't regret it!

Hey! Finale of KS came out last week. Dunno what site you're reading it on, but I've been paying for the episodes on Lezhin, so I've read it already. D : Lemme know when you read it, I'm dying for someone to talk to about it.

Also, sorry I've been awol, just work and stuff getting busy. Hope you're doing well

Oh man! I'm glad you liked Ichi! Wasn't it fucking weird as hell? I was laughing my way through that like whaaaatt just crazy shit. I also really liked all that weird psychological stuff it got into with Sado-Masochism. But yeah, didn't i warn you that the guy just can't seem to write a satisfying ending? It's just a flaw his stories have I guess. And yeah, I was looking into reading the prequel, but I head it it wasn't very good, since it was written like way before. I agree, the backstory behind who that old guy was would have been a great story. The next title of his i'm looking to read is called Adam to Eve I think, another yakuza story I heard was good.

I don't think I have read any Tezuka stuff, but the way you talk about it makes me think I'm missing out. I did watch a little bit of the Dororo anime, but I wasn't enthralled and gave up on it pretty early.

I haven't really been reading a whole lot lately, just staying up to date with some of my currently-running favorites. Also reading some american webtoons. Have you ever looked at Witch Creek Road? It starts out as a like your basic teenager horror, hack-n-slash, but it starts getting really weird. Plus, the gore it just amusing in this one. Take a look if you get bored, it's still pretty new.

Also finally trying to read Home Sweet Home.I forget, did you read Bastard?

Anywhos, hope your exams went well! You started back at school yet? I just started last week, so things will probably start getting busy for me soon. I always enjoy manga more when I know I'm procrastinating something while reading it.

My boyfriend lived there until he was 14, in various parts of the country--seems like there are many many subcultures within the country, being an archipelago and all. More or less he talks about how the culture of collectivism in the Phillipines is the biggest difference, importance of the family over the individual, etc--therefore the individualistic culture of the US is romanticized by the younger generation, especially. He says he always got slack for having a "liberated" mindset like an American, as his dad was American, always getting into trouble. Anyway, he has a lot of interesting stories, I'm sure I wouldn't do them justice, also he left in like 2001, so I'm sure the culture has shifted dramatically even since then.

Anyways....yeah, Ichi the Killer is a great story, I also enjoyed Homunculus, another title by him. Be warned that for some reason this author just does NOT write satisfying endings, from what I've seen they're usally rushed, leave loose ends, unanswered questions, and just dosen't feel satisfying. But his storytelling style is more like a dark, philosophical meandering/exploration of the more grotesque aspects of psychology. Lots of gory or psychologically twisted scenes, but also pretty creative. And while I'm sure a lot of it is there for recoil or shock value, he frames it in a way that makes you think twice about certain concepts that we've been traditionally taught to just sweep under the rug.

Homunculus is about a homeless man (a businessman who suffers a fall from grace) who gets a hole drilled in his skull for money and develops the power to see a person's "true self", as it were. It's hard to explain. Explores lots of aspects of dysfunction and mental illness. https://myanimelist.net/manga/936/Homunculus

I even felt compelled to write a review for this title, esp. since the description basically describes nothing about the story. If you're interested. https://myanimelist.net/profile/Si-Ran/reviews

Ichi the Killer (japanese title Koroshiya 1) is more violent, with some really memorable characters, more action-packed than Homonculus, and just really drives home the excessive gore. Also it explores the psychological dynamics of masochism and sadism, which I found kind of thought-provoking, actually. https://myanimelist.net/manga/932/Koroshiya_1?q=koroshiya%201

His style can be rambling sometimes, but I find it worth the time, even if the endings don't wrap up in a pretty bow or just seem rushed. For him, I think it's more about the ideas put forth than the actual story arc.

These are the two titles of his I've read so far, with plans to read more, but from what I can see those are two of the better-known titles.
