Great taste

Heyy, don't worry :)

Oh man, I just started Revue Starlight actually, pretty dope so far. I swear Penguindrum's core of young directors had some gems. Mitsue Yamazaki did Nozaki-kun and other cool stuff at Doga Kogo and Shouko Nakamura directed Doukyuusei (didn't really like it, but whatever). I'm hoping it'll be different with Furukawa and Revue Starlight lol.

It's so awesome that you loved Chungking! I remember recommending it to you just after watching it, like wayy before we started talking about cinema more often. I have a weak spot for movies that keep repeating the same couple of songs (like The Graduate). Also, Chungking is very rewatchable, I did it myself some months ago. Still awesome. I'm thinking of buying the DVD just to put it next to my FLCL set lol.

On the topic of movies, I went to see "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" yesterday, which I was really looking forward to, gotta say. Didn't find it that great honestly, but I'm clearly in the minority here, still hope you like it.

Are you planning on watching any new seasonal anime? I guess it's a pretty good time to be a Shaft fan. Itamura's new show looks kinda cool. He's really earning a name for directing vampire shows after Monogatari and Vanitas. Unfortunately, Naoyuki Tatsuwa is directing some isekai harem shit at Passione. I think I told you once SoreMachi was directed by Shinbou alone, but that's so not true, it's totally Tatsuwa. And then there's the new RWBY anime Shaft's producing. Sangatsu no Lion director, Arakawa/Nisekoi chara designer, some of the best animation directors from the good ol' Bakemonogatari times, it's looking pretty neat.

Hey evalove, how've you been? I wanted to finish watching Shinsekai Yori before writing you again. However, I went on a bus trip a few weeks ago and started watching this Jubei-chan show (only thing I had downloaded). Anyway, it took a while to finish both lol. Jubei is really cool though, I never knew that studios not named Gainax were creating such well-made, passionate works in the late 90's. Actually there's Utena, but Ikuhara just vanished after it was done for some reason. I'm watching Ouran Host Club now and maaan, Takuya Igarashi is really Ikuhara-school to the bone, his visual style and a lot of his ideas remind me of Utena/Penguindrum.

Now on to Shinsekai Yori, it's so different from the stuff I usually like and still I found it weirdly enjoyable. I don't know why it just never really clicked that much for me as a complete package. I thought the reveal at the end was great, but I swear I don't understand how not a single soul decided to face the death-feedback and kill the damn ogre. I mean, I wouldn't be first in line, but someoone should have done it. Also Squealer is dope. He would be in my top 5 interesting anime villains list if I ever made one (I also love how they made the villain girl in SSSS.Gridman).

Hey evalovee! Just finished watching episode 8 of Shinsekai Yori and had to write you. This show's so interesting damnn. Watching the first episode after the time skip not knowning what would happen was honestly great lol, talk about unexpected.

I need to convince my folks to watch A Brighter Summer Day with me, it's already downloaded. Love Exposure looks like fucking insanity, gotta watch this one as well. I was browsing through some reviews and saw that the 2 movies with the most favorites per users logged on Letterboxd are actually Love Exposure and A Brighter Summer Day. Funny coincidence.

The best movie I've watched recently was definitely The Prestige by Christopher Nolan. This man's minnnnd, wtf honestly.

FLCL Progressive and Alternative were pretty bad as expected, right? You think any of it is still worth watching?
DsMasterBR Apr 13, 2022 11:17 AM
Hi! So, I'm trying to prioritize rewatching some favorites that may just become part of my upper echelon if I come back to them. I'm thinking Berserk, Dennou Coil, KareKano and Haruhi. I also really miss Steins;Gate for some reason, so it's probably next on the line.

Aww, it's not a problem that you didn't love SoreMachi. I don't even know why I think it's so fun, but rewatching it was just the best experience. Same thing with Windy Tales, though it'll probably be considered straight up special by anyone who watches it [it totally is :)].

Watched Oasis by Lee Chang-dong yesterday, and OMG it was amazing. I'm looking forward to watching some of his other movies now. Have you seen any good ones in general as of late?
DsMasterBR Apr 2, 2022 3:29 PM
Heyy, I'm back. And doing pretty well, thank you for the good wishes.

Penguindrum really struck a chord with me, I like basically everything about it lol. Terumi Nishii's chara designs, fucking Ringo. Nishii's a goddess btw. Reimi Sugimoto from JoJo Part 4, Lucy Yamagami from Servant x Service (only watched 3 episodes, but great looking character) for example. Huge fan of Himari's voice actress throughout the whole show too, I should probably know her name, she's awesome. One of my favorite scenes in Penguindrum is when Ringo gets caught in the "Seizon Senryaku!" situation lol. I'm starting to favor rewatches more and more nowadays, and this show is on my short list along with Texh. "Imagiiiiiine!"

Just read your Dress Up Darling review, it was actually really helpful lol, thanks. If I end up watching any show from this last season, I should probably go with Akebi-chan I think, it looks more promising.

And you're right, we never deserved FLCL, but we also don't deserve fucking FLCL Grunge or whatever that trailer was, omg lol.

Yo! :)

I see you there watching Penguindrum... How do you like it so far?

Also Dress-up Darling, I should probably check it out as I loved WEP so much and they got most of the same production team (Shouta Umehara's team, they're doing another show at Cloverworks later this year I think). Is it any good? It does look pretty.

Hey evalove! Hope you had a cool birthday, I was on a trip with friends so I couldn't reply to your message or wish you happy birthday on time. By the day, cool 3x3s you got there, love the Poroporo picture especially, but all the shots look great. Have a good day man!! :)

happy birthday!! hope you have a great day 😊🎉

You know, I should probably be able to answer that, but truth is I really don't have much of a clue hahaha. I'm really interested in evolutionary biology and genetics though, so maybe that would be my preferred field of work in the future. What kind of school subjects did you like studying?

Thank you so much for the manga suggestions. I'm taking a long long time to read Oyasumi Punpun (even though I like it very much), but I do plan to start reading some more manga. Blame! looks great, I think I'll read the first volume today. I was really looking forward to watching Burning, but it just didn't do much for me at all. I'm sorry, don't hate me. I know all his movies are awesomely well-received, so I won't give up just yet. Did you get to watch any of them?

About Wong Kar-Wai, I would start with Chungking Express and then try to watch Fallen Angels too. I watched both on the same week and thought it was the best way to do it. They have some thematic parallels.

I saw you watched April Story by Shunji Iwai the other day. What did you think of it? All About Lily Chou-Chou and Hana to Alice are so incredibly memorable and important to me. Love Letter however, it wasn't really a hit with my family. I wanna show them a good Iwai movie next, otherwise they'll probably hate him forever lol.

"Heard about the guy who fell off a skyscraper? On his way down past each floor, he kept saying to reassure himself: So far so good... so far so good... so far so good. How you fall doesn't matter. It's how you land!".

Love thiss. Such an interesting
quote/anecdote/metaphor in general. And it ties in perfectly with the story, it's great lol.

I've been doing very well evalove, thanks for asking. Last few months were rough though as I had to study for exams and stuff. I'm giving up on Statistics and will hopefully get into Biology School.

Also, 100 days of anime... That's more than three whole months. Crazy when you think about it. I don't think I'll be reaching any other milestone though lol. The number of shows I feel I can't retire without watching is getting smaller and smaller.

I made my family watch all the "Christopher Doyle-Wong Kar-Wai" movies after I fell in love with Chungking. I enjoyed the informal trilogy, and I suspect he's more usually recognized for those movies, but Chungking Express, Fallen Angels and Happy Together are just 😙🤌 in my opinion.

I know Edward Yang did Yi Yi, which I really love, but I never digged any further into his filmography. Sean Baker is one of my favorite directors and he's a big Edward Yang fan apparently. I downloaded movies by 4 other directors because of him actually: Mike Leigh, Chang-dong Lee, Ulrich Seidl and Ruben Ostlund. By the way, I think Play and Force Majeure by Ostlund are just must-watch movies, reaaally enjoyed those.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
