You mean episode 4 in the S2 ? to me that's also one of the thing that bugged me not only in S2 but also for Re Zero in general; It was all of sudden coming out of nowhere and this is the only time we seen his past and his parent throughout the series, therefore I don't feel any emotional weight whatsoever because there was never a hint/foreshadowing nor there's a build up added even from season 1 leading to that episode.
Which is also bring me to one of hiccups in Re Zero storytelling; There is nothing in the anime (I haven't read the LN unfortunately), to suggest that Subaru suffers from that most common human failing - self doubt. After all this Pain, Suffering and Dead He never once says to himself "I wish I never enter this world" or "I wish I could go back". It's the first rule of character development - take a character and see what they're really made of. Put them through the wringer. Make them doubt themselves. Force them to grow. Not to mention he was a NEET who needs support from his parent so, why they were never mentioned even in S1 bugs me a bit.
And don't forget those also were (even perhaps in real life) not his true parent because it was just illusion projected by Echidna, the scene does its pupose in which it resolves Subaru's inner problem but in the biggest scale of thing aka real world it doesn't do anything because again it's not set in real world. This paragraph is just some idiot hater nitpicking though. So don't mind it much, what matter is, it resolves some part of subaru's inner problem
I also having hard time feeling Subaru's pain whenever he breaks down after getting brutally dead so many times. I mean despite not liking the series, there's psychological strain of teetering between mortality and immortality that I feel could make the Re Zero quite interesting. I mean In essence, Subaru is immortal because obviously he can reset time if he was dead, but because people always forget their experiences with him, he’s also mortal in a sense. Re:Zero however briefly touches on this idea, and this is, again, why the show is such unfulfilled potential in my eyes. for instance. Take episode where he got brutally murdered by the rabbit or When he got bonded and gagged by Garfield for 3 days straight, that could drive someone both physically and mentally exhausted, but look at the matter of second how He went back to regular ol’ Mr. Meta teasing with Otto who saved him. It was simply unbelievable to me.
Okay about the consequences, maybe because I never been investing myself in Re Zero enough, but I never seen negative consequences in Subaru Time-Reset Power. Yes he got some suffering and pain by doing so but it's becoming plot armor more than anything else. (I already mentioned about how he went normal easily as well), there was none other negative consequences by doing this time loop unlimited time. Not to mention, in the anime it was never explained how 'the checkpoint' works, and as if it was there whenever the show wants to or wherever the author wants and not because it was set by a certain rule.
This is maybe silly but with this power he has if it was me, I would find the softest and quickest method to die whenever I got fucked up so I can just restart a new storyline and new route rather than finding myself in despair and cried everytime in female's lap/anything else. And within this time loop he actually can become the most intelligent person in this world by studying anything related to the world. Which is also one of thing that bugged me with Re Zero storytelling, despite all this thing about ritual, the lifeline of some characrers, there's a lack of Urgency; there's no time pressure or limitation whatsoever that ever coming to Subaru.
Also, I'd pick Emilia too. Because that's simply I ain't fancy Rem that much (or more to the fact Takahashi Rie voice), but from story perspective it was kinda dissapointing even after this 2 season she still an empty characters and she was supposed to be the main heroine.
Anyway, If you want to discuss more you can just leave the comment and I'll try to reply whatever I can. But I'm not sure I was the right person to discuss things like this though. I mean I disliked Re Zero and I'd doubt my opinion can get swayed after talking this with its fan, most of my problem coming from very subjective point by watching the anime and furthermore I don't read in depth review or analysis of the show because I simply don't care and not following it. But this is my thought on your comment and As said you can reply this but this is not an informative place to talk about re zero because I'm simply a hater. It's always best to talk with someone who also share the same passions as you and I simply not "that person" (Pun Intended). So cheers.
I don't wanna reply in the forums so pardon me for replying about re zero here
I'm finding hard time to find a reason of why I should root for Subaru. More or less come to conclusion that I don't find him relatable. He was a shut-in who consequently never shut up, he was initially super rash and careless, he fell in love with someone even though he barely knew her, so on and so forth. Even till S2 part 1 finished this issue still never been adressed.
