The use of colour was very good, I agree. I think a lot of the characters' eyes were done extremely well, and colour was used effectively. I understand what you mean, for sure.
(Sorry for the SUPER late reply, only just saw this!)
Yeah, I feel that. With some characters I think the visual style works (the little girl whose name escapes me, for example) but in general it was a miss for me. Pretty damn Yugioh, I agree. Although, I admire the balls to try something like that, if that's what they were going for.
But yeah, in general it was a good series. If it flattened out a few of my issues with it then it may well have been a favourite.
I like that you clearly really love Shiki but are willing to admit it's faults. Not a lot of people have the ability to do that.
I agree with your faults for it. I've heard a couple of people say that the aesthetic is supposed to be bizarre and otherworldly to put the watcher on edge through the contrast or something, but it never really worked for me and I just felt the character designs to be off-putting. And ham-fisted is the perfect way to described the transition from loving village into the personification of human evil. It could and should've been done in a more subtle manner.
Shiki was really cool. I have a few problems with it but by and large it's essentially what I wish all horror anime was like. Slow burn is my preferred style a lot of the time to build tension.
Lmao, Italy loves their donut haired JOJO too. Since they basically changed the cover of the game to Gio instead of Jotaro. His such an underrated JOJO, his like such an ass and a total sweetheart too.
;3; my bf actually loves Gio to death.
Higurashi Kai isn't just some random pointless sequel like the other Higurashi OVAs, it's literally the answer arc to the first season. Things will start to make a lot more sense when you watch it.
Yeah, I'm a sucker for Deep Blue Sea, that movie is much fun. Red Dragon is the second movie, I thought it was okay. Man, you have to watch Hannibal the new TV show on NBC. Season 1 just wrapped up, 13 episodes of pure horror bliss. :) It rivals Silence of the Lambs and is way better than all the other Hannibal movies. Oh yeah, I see you're watching Higurashi. Liking it so far? It's one of my favourites.
Cabin in the woods is great. So is Nightmare on Elm Street, although I prefer Part 3: Dream Warriors, but that's just me. I love From Dusk To Dawn to death, and I did like the Blair With Project. I fucking hate Jaws though. Why? It tricked me. The first 20-30 minutes are a pure horror movie, then it turns into lame, boring action movie for over an hour. HATE IT. I have to admit though, that first kill where you can't see the shark is fucking chilling.
If you like shark movies like I do, you probably know there's only 2 or 3 in existence that are any good. I recommend The Reef, and Open Water. They're both really good and have really scary sequences with live shark footage and minimal use of CGI. Also if you like a more campy shark movie, I recommend Deep Blue Sea.
Here's my top 10 horror films, I'm very picky.
The Descent
The Loved Ones
Eden Lake
Se7en
Ginger Snaps 2
Rosemary's Baby
Repulsion
Silence Of The Lambs
28 Days Later
Dawn Of The Dead (remake)
Cube
You should check some of those out. Nice to meet you, haven't met really any horror fans on MAL.

And no problem at all, haha.
