It's just that an unrequited love story, or even a true love one where both individuals are separated by family or distance, or whatever else, makes the story all the more emotional, because many people can relate. That is then why, the movie was a let-down compared to the incredible manga. The manga explored all three characters' stories, and showed Akari still loved Takaki, but gave up on him for the same reasons he gave up on her. In my view, they could've easily tried rebuilding their friendship. I get it, it's been 5-10-15 years, but all it would've taken is either Akari or Takaki reaching out to the other, seeing if they're okay, start out fresh. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Takaki's college education taken in the same areas as Akari's residence, or would it have been closer than where he went to grade school?
Sorry for rambling on, but it's just that, the amazing story that it is...it's held back because neither character took the initiative. In that, I feel disappointment for them, but sheer sadness for Risa and Kanae. They wanted so much to be the one for Takaki, but he would never get over a girl he fell for 10-15 years prior (that he won't even try to contact). So yes, the anime to me was bland, while the manga was decent (but still has me pissed at both Akari and Takaki).
