Well, you know more about this country's media than I do. I generally agree with your estimate, I think - innuendo might have occured anyway if one of the parties was a woman, perhaps less so if they were married.
I wonder if the public image of a politician comes into play, too - I mean, I find it harder to imagine the media portraying a Brown-Clegg coalition in the same way.
I have nothing else to say. To be fair, the language of news reports (Cameron wooing Clegg, "getting in bed with the Tories", etc.) probably doesn't help.
