I recently discovered the amazing world of anime, so I'm probably a newbie compared to many of the members here. Anime is fairly unknown in Norway. Nevertheless, I have watched a good amount of anime in the last couple of years. After using this site for great tips a few times, I finally decided to join MAL (I have no one in Norway to discuss anime with anyways).
I watched a lot of animation as a kid while growing up with Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon (and I still like to catch a Disney or Pixar movie every now and then). It wasn't until 2012 (last year) that I opened my eyes to this - albeit unknown in North Europe - highly popular phenomenon from Japan/Korea. Until then, I viewed anime as something childish (I loved Pokémon as a kid, but it was also the only anime that I was truly familiar with). I was bored one day and thought "heck, why not?" and completed the first adult anime show in my life: "Highschool of the Dead". I later found "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brootherhood" streaming on YouTube for free and I was officially hooked.
Several animes later I discovered "Death Note" with an intelligent plot and episodes where I found myself sitting on the edge of my chair on several occasions. More recently I finished the first season of "Attack On Titan" which provided stunning artwork and action scenes along with an intriguing story.
So what am I left with? I have learned about a culture and mindset (and some language) from a different part of the world. I have learned that anime can be for everyone. One thing that I like about anime is that the possibilities are endless; there are no rules, just freedom of expression.

lol, a human can't rate things accurately, and mostly just rate by personal thoughts. If I ever rate something as a 1, it'll mean I watched 5 minutes of something, then quit xD . But I usually don't ever pick that bad of an anime to even get the chance of rating it as a 1, or I wouldn't even count that anime on my "watched" list lol. Another reason why I rate above 5 or so, is because most anime are meaningful and special in some way or another. Basically no anime are hate-able enough to rate super low for me. Hard to explain it, without explaining how humans work or some other complex equation lol.
Add on: Also, no anime is really "perfect" cause nothing is "perfect" in actuality. Well, a 10 is considered a 'Masterpiece', and most of the time I just rate something I enjoyed with as little errors and full enjoyment in said anime.
Great to hear man :)
I was also a newbie just a year ago. All I knew were anime I grew up with, i.e; Pokemon, Dragonball Z, Naruto...and then I discovered the many other anime out there. Welcome aboard man :)
I've watched Shuffle before, it was definitely unlike other harems. Although I rated it as a 6 lol, I definitely think it is more on track than other harems. I watched Shuffle Memories, not Shuffle, so maybe the previous was better.
But I think maybe School Days, the last harem before the latest S2 harems I've watched, tainted me. It made me realize how ridiculous harems are. Basically it made me think about harems realistically. Jealousy...
I see you haven't seen School Days yet. Watch it, and see what I mean. People say it's a bad anime because of the realism it portrays. I thought it was excellent in actually executing a scenario well. The characters will annoy you, but compare them to real life adolescence idiots, or the broad amount of incompetent humans, and you will see the situation/characters aren't so farfetched.
P.S. I would love to see what you'd rate as a 10 lol. The highest is 9 for you, and those anime are good xD . 6, 7 is your preferred, while I rate pretty higher lol, 6 is like pretty bad for me.
But the latest
