*It may have some spoilers, but nothing huge, I promise*
Well, 1st this anime is not like every other Battle Shonen if thats what you want or if thats what you're afraid to be; although this doesnt mean that its either good or bad. It also doesnt mean that its story doesnt have cliches. Even so, I find Tower of God, at least its 1st season, really good.
I started watching with no expectations, I've seen some people talking about it and thats all, but suddenly I've learned that it was one of the big hypes of the Spring Season; and ep after ep I realized the
...
reason why.
Tower of God starts as confusing as you can imagine, giving to you barely a thing so you can understand the characters or even the world they're in and the rules that they obey in the 1st episode, but they give enough so you can start the puzzle in your head, trigging you to keep watching. That sense of mistery and the feeling that there's still a lot to know doesnt end with episode 2, it actually keeps ongoing till the very end.
As I've said, ToG is not our usual Battle Shonen, however it still uses some classic cliches of them. Bam is the usual normal, sweet and kind guy which apparently doesnt have anything special, but hides some special power within; being someone who broke one of the main rules stablished by the anime. Rak is the classic explosive guy whos always going directly to battle without thinking twice (maybe not even once). While Khun is the frivolous and smart guy. Even so they're very carismatic and their reason to be with the protagonist is made very clear soon and their relationship is very natural.
While more characters and more character are shown, the story keeps growing till the main group is built. Their relationships may be a little rushed but its far from bad or being forced, and they are all very unique and carismatic in their own way. Even though you still dont know much about the world per se, you soon start to understand a little more how things work and it starts to feel a little bit more natural.
The artstyle from it is also kind of different of the majority. Its more like a cartoon, but it maintains the eastern patterns. I think it works well and it fits perfectly the anime somehow; I've read some reviews saying that they chose something similar to the original manhwa, but honestly I dont know since I havent read, this is only how it felt to me. Though, I gave a high note Im not saying that its Art is to be compared with something from Kyoto Animation, for example - thats not even their goal-. Its very simplistic, and I think that thats the charm. Animation is also good, but nothing really special; its better than Nanatsu no Taizai 3rd Season, at least.
The soundtrack is good, but also nothing special; it has some good themes but not that memorizing. The opening and ending isnt like the generic anime op and its good, it has both japanese and korean versions.
As I previously said, the highpoint of Tower of God is the characters, but its story is also very intriguing, though it still lacks some highlight that you can say "thats some anime" its not disappointing at all. Well, actually for me theres a moment in the last episode, but I cant really reveal what, since this is a spoiler free review, but it made me really anxious for a next season. But its about the motivation of a certain character and one of the main reasons why I think thats not any usual anime; it was really well developed and surprising.
So, I cant assure that you will like Tower of God or that you wont be disappointed; but with it was the other way around. Give it a try.
