Do you like to read? :)

Hey thanks for aceepting my friend request, message me anytime if you want to talk about anime or anything in general =)

I said I'd praise you if I found anything good on your list, so just wanted to throw out a thank you for inadvertently leading me to Ajin. Starting on 91 Days, which is damn promising from the start.
Unfortunately, it seems most of your high scores I haven't seen are shounen and slice of life, which would just cancel out that compatibility, but I'm happy to find even two great shows I'd have probably missed out on otherwise.

Apology rejected. How dare you not keep me entertained in a prompt and timely manner!
No problem. It's surprising enough when the gag profile doesn't scare people off.
Hope you feel better.

I think I understand what you mean by thinking Eva is forced. I didn't get that, myself, but it IS genre deconstruction, which necessitates the deviations from audience expectations are deliberate. I've heard the same complaints about Madoka; some people would have been happier with some of its elements written into something more familiar, written strictly for audience enjoyment, than to have made a hard-line agenda out of inverting every single mahou shoujo trope it could get its hands on. (surprised you didn't have the same problem with Psycho-Pass; I hear it labeled pretentious so often because people thought the constant allusions to literature and parallels of real-world issues were too forced)
Incidentally, that's my issue with Yuasa--he tries too hard to be original, and thus most of his work feels more like an amateurish parody than "creative". Like the anime version of a child's macaroni art. (on that topic, I'm also surprised to see you loved Kuuchuu Buranko; :O it could easily pass for a Yuasa work and seems to be most loved by Yuasa fans)

Camus said that one of the reasons there is so much trash in fiction is that the greatest works are the manifestations of their creators' philosophies, which gives every writer the notion that to write something good, they too can create something deep and profound, even when they are not, themselves, philosophers.
Of course, he spoke of the pretention of literature--would you believe he wasn't an anime fan?!--but I think it applies laterally to any art.

"but i am highly honored :)"
Don't be. It just means I'll hold you responsible if I wind up disliking something you gave a high score. :P
But I'll be sure to praise you should I find any masterpieces.

I have a stiff neck which is going to kill me right now, but other than that I'm fine ^^
Which anime are you watching? :)
Ikusagami Nov 21, 2016 1:16 AM
I stopped reading Berserk around volume 33 or so. I think they'd chased off the pirates, or something... haven't felt like getting back into it since. I had stalled at that troll arc for a few years too.

"And you know... I like unique people and characters :)"
I shall take that as an indirect compliment. XD

Have you seen End of Evangelion? The series is overrated, to be sure, but I'd hardly call it pretentious. I think it deserves merit simply for being genre deconstruction. Twenty years later, most anime is still populated by cardboard archetypes and wish fulfillment self-insert protagonists fit into demographic-defined cliche plotlines. Having characters with psychological depth and an antihero protagonist in a story that convoluted the typical mecha formula made it a serious impact on the anime industry, even if it's far from a masterpiece.
But that said, End of Eva really is intelligent. I don't expect the typical fanboys who gush over it to have read up on Freud, Jung, or Gnostic mythology to fully appreciate it, but as somebody who has, I can say that any piece of fiction that EFFECTIVELY channels Freud, Jung and Gnostic mythology is a couple steps above average entertainment.
(*cough* obligatory Xenogears/Xenosaga reference *cough*)
For me, the only anime I'd label pretentious, by definition, would be stuff by Masaaki Yuasa and Kunihiko Ikuhara; faux symbolism, abstract aesthetics and contrived ambiguity to give the illusion of depth, but doesn't stand up to critical scrutiny.

But as for anime being "pretentious" do let me know what you think if you ever watch Ergo Proxy. Due to its philophical themes, it seems to be a record breaker for "most pretentious anime". I'm always overjoyed to find somebody who actually fuckin' LIKES it. There are like three of us.

Much the same thoughts I had on Hellsing U.
Gonna have to peruse your list for anything I haven't seen. Just noticed you have higher compatibility than anybody else by like 5%, so I may have to make you my new recommendations reference.

Hi, thank you for having accepted the FR ^^
How is going?
AlexanderSno Nov 17, 2016 5:32 PM
Yeah, it does have almost comically simple characters. I liked it for the action though.
I actually totally forgot about the "comedy" in that series. I remember the girl who turned a vampire being there attempt at having some comedy relief I guess and it not working. Oh god! I forgot until you mentioned that.
Ikusagami Nov 17, 2016 4:31 PM
Oh, and I see you recently watched Hellsing Ultimate. As disappointed as I was?
It's labeled a seinen, even though it's got less depth than a stereotypical shounen.
Ikusagami Nov 17, 2016 4:26 PM
Well damn, shows how much outta the loop I am. I didn't even know they made another Berserk series. Just looked it up, though, and it's based on events after the Golden Age Arc. So it's inevitably going to be inferior, because, after reading the manga, I can attest the story really loses its momentum the longer it goes on. He spends like four volumes just fighting trolls.

Crush hard on Hisoka? Well those would be some... interesting... tastes. Most women are afraid of clowns, not turned on by them, after all. I imagine his wedding would be full of balloon animals... and dismembered bodies.
All very romantic.

Glad to see somebody DISlike Haibane Renmei for a change. I've seen so much ludicrous praise for that rubbish. I'm a bibliophile with a penchant for classical literature, (Shakespeare nerd; yes I am boring, thank you) so I have an ingrained HATRED for slice of life. And Haibane Renmei is just a slice of after life. The last episode was amazing, but it doesn't make up for nine episodes of ABSOLUTELY. NOTHING. HAPPENING!
It's impossible for somebody with an objective sense for narrative criticism to call the series as a whole a well-written show. But I'm pretty sure Lain had the same writer as Texhnolyze, so it shares similar merits and flaws.

Personal recommendation:
DO NOT WATCH PSYCHO PASS SEASON 2.
It's not "bad" per se... It is entertaining... but it's not on par with season 1. And it's not even written or directed by the same people, so it's easy to just say it's more fanfiction (with some really off-the-wall asspull plot contrivances) than an actual sequel to a really intelligently written show. I loved the way the first season hyperbolized real-world issues and tied them in with literary parallels. I've seen so many people label it "pretentious" because they lacked the intelligence to catch the naunce.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
