2021 update: i'm not as active on here as i once was and my list is pretty outdated, but feel free to leave a comment and i'll try to get back to you before humanity's mass extinction B)
My Surface-Level Scoring System:
Keep in mind that I'm a fairly critical person, and I consider everything above a 5 to be enjoyable, but the lower the score, the more flaws it has. The same can be said for anything rated below a 5, except the lower the score the more I dislike it. Anything above a 7 is something I consider to be truly great, so an 8 or higher is a rare score for me to give as it means it truly resonated with me.
10: These works have affected me on a deep, personal level, and I feel that they're an outstanding representation of all that the medium has to offer. They most likely have strong writing, directing, animation, and sound design in an anime's case, or artistic prowess showcased by the mangaka and a narrative that is greatly complimented by every single page's layout in a manga's case. These works all possess a high emotional value to me. Easily an all-time favorite piece of media.
9: These works may have some combination of the attributes of the works that receive a 10, but there's something that I feel holds them back or likely doesn't have the same raw emotional impact a show that has a 10 does. Still likely a masterpiece in my opinion.
8: A great work that likely doesn't affect me on the same raw emotional level that 9 and 10 scoring works do. There may be something I feel the show is missing that holds it back from its true potential, but it's still great.
7: A good work that's enjoyable, and likely has one standout element be it art, writing, or directing. They're not perfect by any means, but they still are some of the better works that the medium has to offer.
6: A work that was overall entertaining, but definitely isn't without its fair share of problems. I don't regret watching it, but it wasn't exactly a life-changing experience.
5: A work that is average in every since in the word, or is equal parts good and bad. Every work from here on out are works that I regret watching to some extent, that level of regret being greater the lower the score. It's somewhat rare that I give out this score as my opinions are usually more extreme than this middle ground score.
4: From here on out, these are all works I actively dislike. There may be a saving grace to this work that doesn't make it an atrocity, but overall, it's definitely not something I enjoyed.
3: Works I dislike with a passion, and may even feel that the medium would be a better place without their existence. They may have a redeeming factor such as cinematography or animation or manga artwork, but it doesn't excuse the fact that it's literal dogshit.
2: A work that's mind-bogglingly terrible. A show given this rating offended me on multiple levels, but not to the point where I contemplated death like those rated a 1 did. This is where most "meme" shows go as well, and by that I mean a show that's notorious for being a train-wreck, and that's what most of the fun (or suffering) lies in.
1: A 1 is reserved for a special kind of work. A special kind of work that is so abysmal, disgraceful, and insulting to the consumer, that it makes me disturbed to even think about. This is a rare rating for me to give out, as works that receive this rating represent everything wrong with the medium, which not many works are able to be bad enough to do so. These works come straight from avici hell.
Those are just the basic guidelines you can use to evaluate how I feel about a certain work, but feel free to ask me for more in-depth opinions. I also write a brief synopsis of my thoughts on every work I’ve seen in the tags section of my anime and manga lists, so feel free to check there as well.
