I can't agree with you when it comes to the review of summertime render. i don't want to invalidate your opinion but i'd like to point out a few parts where you're completely off. For exemple the glitch effects. i'll get to every aspect you went for and speak of it to explain additionnal information you seem to have missed and how they are supposed to be interpreted since this anime/manga which i love very much seems to have completely gone over your head. the reason im telling this is because you said you wished people would say why they like some things in your comments. i can send a link to it if you want. anyway. lets begin
To begin, you speak of uninteresting characters.
When it comes to characters in anime, more often than not, they have maybe one or two layers to them which are solely meant to push forward the plot. This is because they have no flavour or realism to them. for exemple, my experience with re: zero, another time loop anime, was awful and i dropped it because of how incredibly stupid the main character was. the point being that maybe you haven't noticed but a very strong selling point of this anime is the realism in the character's actions. For shinpei, he doesn't take an obsene amount of time to understand the looping power he has. I'll avoid speaking too much of it because of the obvious spoilers.
Anime's with looping in them as a theme are actually a bit under used. Usually this trope is either extremely well used or fails miserably. another possibility of its usage is [sppoiler="mirai nikki spoiler"]like in the case of mirai nikki where the main antagonist loops but the fact that she does isnt relefvant until the end...[/spoiler]. animes like sakurada reset use time looping in a very interesting way. with save points like re: zero. but cases can exist where it just doesnt work and i understand that you might think this is one of them.
the static effects.
yes. we are still a bit shook after the very sad state the higurashi franchise has been taken with the 2 last instalments. i enjoyed them but truly they were awful. gou and sotsu generally were useless and brought nothing. this was because of flashy effects and exaggerated blood spills. the point of a mystery anime is that the viewer has to try to piece things together. this anime, summertime render does this by feeding us info. and by the way. this isn't a gou or sotsu case. when it comes to the static that are "cheesy", tell that to the fucking author man. the fucking static is literally in the manga. who fucking knows LMAO. its not some animation added to make it more scary theres some lore. anyway again. avoiding spoilers...
then you talk about the way she comes from the shadows. i just don't understand why you wouldn't understand the most basic information about the shadows! the reason they are called shadows is their fucking shadow.... bro. anyway this part is on you. there's no explaining here you're either fucking picky or dumb.
speaking of the setting now.
you position this anime as a laughing stock. Summertime Render is a mystery as we can all agree on. can you really judge a mystery in the first 3 episodes when its a 2 cour anime. in case you don't know what that means, it means it will have around 24 episodes. so the first few are nothing like the actual flavour of this anime. this is mostly because you know nothing of the anime when you start it. the goal isn't to explain everything from the get go. every aspect of the anime is supposed to be reviewed and theorized by the viewer. something you haven't been doing. you've been assuming without actually looking at the information given to you. you want artistic merit? roast it when you've seen the entire thing!
you can't critic the animation since it's actually very good. just look at the shadows! for me, i was sure they were going to cgi that shit. but they actually animated it. even the peak of episode 5, which you haven't seen, is fully animated!
sound wise, i suppose you're not immersed at all. use headphones please. as a supernatural and mystery, part of the show is the immersion with the sound. a bit like the horror anime "another". the biggest part of it is the soundtrack supposed to bring you places that simple images can't. it's one of the reasons i like it so much. because another and summertime have in common the same thing. they aren't telling you who is the villain. they are all shadows and you CANNOT tell shadow from not unless you know the difference. and there is one. its plot relevant so i cant say.
and then you come to roast the op and ed. that has to be the most stupid thing you could have done actually. that part is what comes COMPLETELY invalidate your whole opinion.
the op is notes that shinpei take. you would know this if you were still watching. whatever man. actually dumb monke.
as for the ed. its literally the real island irl. do you really think this is just some random island???? the author's childhood home, the island where the story takes place, is subject in the ed! you just brushed off all meaning.
some im going to brush on you the very fair assumption that you have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to any mystery media.
keep watching those adorable shows like miss shachiko, kunoichi, and those cute anime which, can be good but in no way put in value the knowledge in mystery media you claim to have.
at the end of summertime render, if it falls flat, i will apologize, but you're way off if you think that what was shows so far is anything but top tier.
