In an effort to understand the numerous cosplays, waifs, and subculture references, Ive taken to watching many mainstream and popular animus as of late. This has taken up most of my time. If I didn't have this self-imposed constant, I love watching anything steampunk or cyberpunk, and have a huge love of the old and obscure. Anything from Bubblegum Crisis to Dallos to King of Thorn, the fewer views, the better!

I take the Roger Ebert approach to reviewing shows. Numbers and rankings are mostly just arbitrary and many people rate and review based on the notion that only things 9 and above should be considered. Rather than that, I believe a show should be taken at the value that a reviewer places on it.

Ratings and scores are purely subjective and reflect on how I felt after finishing a show, as well as my level of enjoyment with what the show delivered. Its why Emma can receive a 7 but Nanatsu no Taizai could receive an 8, even though I enjoyed the former far more.

When reviewing shows, I will rarely, if ever measure them based on other shows I have watched or enjoyed. Rather, I seek to rate a show based on how well it accomplishes the goals it sets out to achieve. If an anime is action, or ecchi, I will review them on how well they accomplish this goal. If it is trying to show symbolism or make a point, I will rate it based on how well the creators were able to make their point as well as the subtlety of their work. I consider a 9 to be a stand-out show. One of the best in their genre. Either excellent plot, great characters, or just a fun watch, my criteria for what earn a 9 are good. Shows like Code Geass and Sidonia no Kishi are that example of pure quality in my opinion. I very rarely give out 10s. 10s are given to shows that transcend genres to become something both impressive/moving or truly revolutionary. Its why you can see a show like Panty and Stocking stand side-by-side with Haibane Renmei.

I basically rate on how well a show accomplishes its given goal. Maybe how it surprised me, was the plot good (sidonia no kishi), were the characters relatable (Neon Genesis Evangelion), maybe did the show offer/deftly execute a concept or take on a genre/characters not seen before? Perhaps the film used animation to create something that never could have existed in real life (like any of Satoshi Kon's absolutely fantastic works).
