I totally sympathize with you. Kon kon does not equal whee whee!

Here's another one: In the market, the the girl says "Mommy, that girl has a tail", and her mom says "Yes, dear, lots of kids have ponytails" in the subs. But that's not what was really said. The girl actually said "Mommy, that girl was floating", and her mom says "Yes, tofu does float when you boil it" (I think — I didn't quite catch all of the mom's line). Why did they see the need to change that? Apparently tofu is too foreign a thing for English speakers to understand. Gimme a break...

To be honest, I've felt like subs in general are getting worse and worse every season. It's nothing like the early days of cringeworthy fansubs, but instead, they're intentionally changing so much unnecessarily. Funimation's subs are the worst, adding their own political agendas and whatnot. Call me a purist, but I think that subs should neither add nor remove anything from the original unless it's completely unavoidable. Whether a person agrees with the views in the "new improved" Funimation subs is not the issue. They just shouldn't be changing them in the first place! The original said "light novel readers"? Then translate it as "light novel readers", not "horny losers".

Sorry, I got a little heated. At any rate, I'm glad to know that someone else thinks that "whee whee" is not an acceptable translation of "kon kon". I've seriously thought about writing my own subs for viewers who prefer subs as close to the original as possible. Maybe I should actually.
