First of all, my apologies for the late reply; the admin usually responsible for accepting new members has been inconvenienced for a while.
I'd like to welcome you to the "Critics and Connoisseurs" club. Please feel free to take some time to familiarize yourself with the club rules posted on the club's main page and in the FAQ thread.
We'd like the members to stay active by reading/watching the spotlighted entries as much as their time allows them to and also by participating in the discussion threads and most importantly by voting in the weekly polls. I hope that you enjoy your time at the "Critics and Connoisseurs" club as an active member.
GOOD DAY FALC MEMBERS! This may be too late already but let us still greet you a BELATED HAPPY NEW YEAR, at least. We’re having our very first newsletter to start the New Year. Hoooray~ We tried our best to shorten this as much as possible. And now, first things first:
FILIPINO ANIME LOVERS CLUB (FALC)
FALC, as the name says, is a MAL club for Filipino anime lovers – pure or half – and for everyone who’s interested to know more about the Filipino culture. Visit once in a while and leave a comment here. Who knows, maybe you’ll be able to meet someone in your area who’s pretty much the same as you – one who loves anime. We would really be glad to see the club alive with your comments. Don’t forget to be friendly, ok? Also, in here, you could find different threads that may catch some of your attention.
Here's a quick guide! Just click the buttons above. Each number represents a topic in the FALC thread.
Click the picture below to visit the chat. See you there~
ATTENTION: January 21-22 (Otaku Expo 2012)
Visit this site for the schedule of activities and click #7 if you want to meet other con/expo goers!
PS. There's a longer and a more explained version for this newsletter here if you ever want to see it that is HAHAHA Thank you for reading this one, btw. Have a nice day and take care minna~
You know, I'm not much of a manga reader, but I think I'll start reading Skip Beat! after I complete the anime, because I doubt the romantic situation will be in any way resolved. :p
Anyway, Ren and Fuwa's development so far interests me, because if this were a different story, wouldn't Fuwa be a stronger love interest? He seems like the prototypical haughty shoujo lead dude: Pretty boy, talented, antagonistic toward the female lead ... but also crafted so that the girl can get under his skin, solve his personal issues and they can fall in love and have a relationship that lasts one or two turbulent years before they break up long after the story ends.
But I've been shocked at how small a presence Fuwa has had during the series. He's the impetus behind Kyoko's desire to enter show business, but he's appeared in maybe a little more than a third of the episodes so far, and almost always in short bursts. The one potential spark of romantic interest toward him from Kyoko so far (when she reflects on how cool Fuwa looks when he is singing at the talk show) is directly contrasted by how Fuwa continually hides any hint of his true self during the talk show interview. He's literally putting on an act, and it's the only source of his coolness.
I can't speak for the original manga author, but it almost seems as if she -- and by extension the anime -- is sticking it to that type of lead male.
Ren, on the other hand, is a much more natural type of character, and to seems to me like a mix of the antagonistic type and the bland nice guy Kazehaya types, taking the best qualities of both kinds of characters (while still leaving in natural flaws). His antagonism toward Kyoko is more understandable and reasonable than Fuwa's, even though it is based upon a misunderstanding. If I were Ren, I might have thought the same thing about Kyoko at first, since she really does come off like she is not taking anything seriously at all.
I like that Ren and Kyoko's relationship is based upon earned respect that could blossom into love rather than horniness that blossoms into lust lol. Obviously Kyoko earns Ren's respect during the story, but Ren has to earn Kyoko's respect, too, by being mindful of her as a person and matching every surprising thing she throws at him. Ren and Kyoko have that antagonistic beginning to their relationship, but it doesn't feel childish. In a way, I see it like Nodame and Chiaki in Nodame Cantabile, where the romance comes as a side effect of both leads getting deeper into their craft and growing together.
And as far as flaws go, one moment I love is when Ren deducts 10 points from Kyoko when she goes on about it being her duty to take care of Ren when she acts as a stand-in manager ... she doesn't really mean that she's taking care of Ren solely because of some sense of duty (by that time she's starting to like Ren as a person), but he takes it that way nonetheless, and his feelings are hurt and he reacts in a somewhat childish way. But he refuses to show it because the whole thing made him feel a bit more distance between himself and Kyoko. I like that moment because it humanizes Ren a bit more; he can be as silly, petty and needlessly self-harming as anyone else.
Anyway, tl;dr that was more like a post itself than an idea ... but, yeah, mostly it would be about what different types of love interests they are and how they relate to Kyoko's development.
[/LONG ASS COMMENT]

Also, Fuwa can go fuck himself.
